Hi,

Can any body advise me on whether SF or VV supports more than one sound card. I am running out of input and output options and want to try more than one sound card.

Using SF5 and VV3 on Win2K machine

Thanks

You might try a card with more ins and outs first. Aardvark has a few that I am familiar with ... www.aardvarkaudio.com; however, if your card manufacturer says that you can put multiple cards in the machine, then I would imagine that SF software will support it.

I'm quite fond of Frontier Design. I'm using a WaveCenter PCI with a Tango 24 that allows 8 i/o analog, 8 i/o Adat, plus Spdif. Works great with SF5/6 & VV3. (sorry for the plug) I also have a Motu 2408 that allows the same types of i/o's (but more), just didn't like it as much and it's available if anyone wants it.

Thanks!
Don

Guys thanks for the reply.

However when you look atthe cost of these things you have to wonder whether two cards in a machine would be a better bet !

Yes -

I have both Audiophile 2496 and VIA AC-97 onboard chipset working under Win2K. I can record at 32x44.1 on both cards, and have even specified using the 2496 for record and the AC-97 for playback when I was troubleshooting the bogus Delta drivers that caused me hours of grief before the recent Beta release.

I have no problems/conflicts now and enjoy wonderful LP/Tape restores and MP3 playback with the 2496.

I have enjoyed a couple years with my Echo Gina Cards. These cards allow you to have more than one installed on a system. They each have 2-IN 8-OUT and SPDIF I/O as well. These cards are now about $350 a piece, but are nice because you can buy 1 and then upgrade to another once your budget allows for it. I have 2 installed on my system and they work great with Sound Forge and Vegas. I currently have 2 Gina cards installed which gives me a total of 8 INS and 20 outs. You could add a third card for additional I/O if needed.

VV will let you use multiple cards of different types. There will be a problem however.

There is no way to assure sync between two physically different cards. Even if you lock their clock sources together, there is no way for Vegas to start both cards at exactly the same time. This is a limitation of the wave driver model.

If the cards do not have their clocks locked to a common source - or one is master, the other slave - then you will evenutally get drifts on playback. If you attempt to record from both cards at the same time, you will have slightly different sample rates on the material you recorded and will never be able to accurately sync them.

Some hardware vendors support multiple cards and can maintain synchronous starting between them.

Depending on your needs, either check with your current hardware vendor to see if they support this or upgrade to a card that provides the number of inputs you require.

Are you talking about multiple Soundblaster type cards? The cheapest "pro" card I have found out there is close to $200 . The Aark24 is around $600 (8ins/outs). Of course if all you want is 4 ins and outs (2 cards for $400), then there is no reason to get an 8in/out card.
