4K editing proxy woes

3d87c4 wrote on 6/5/2016, 10:47 PM
Trying to edit some 4K video---stitched 360 view clips from my new Kodak SP360 4K cameras.

I've added the clips to my project media folder and have been creating proxy files, adding them to my timeline, and editing them as I go.

As the day has progressed I have experienced multiple hangs and errors resulting in, at times, multiple Sony Vegas and File I/O surrogate (not visible) processes showing in my Task Manager. Often the proxy file was generated and usable after restarting Vegas or rebooting the computer.

I am now at the point where Vegas is just issuing the error below and hanging.

Suggesions...I'm not sure where to go from here.

Assuming the project was corrupted I started over fresh, turned on the auto proxy generation, and rapidly progressed to about the same point and hit a wall again. (project is a little over 3:30 minutes long, BTW) Any new clips had audio only!

Opening a second, new, project I could load the remaining clips without any problem..so I don't think the problem is the clips themselves.

I looked into the nesting the project, but my first attempt to import a project file took too long. I tried importing the media from the second project mentioned above and the import went to 72% and stayed there.

At this point I am going to try punting---rendering the two project files and combining them in a third.

Surely there's a better way? C'mon someone, give me a clue. Please?

Have you considered creating low bit rate, 720p files to use as proxies in another application such as Handbrake? You could use the batch encoder. That would shed some light on whether the files themselves might be at fault.

Per Mediainfo, these files have an odd Display Aspect Ratio for 3840x2160 pixel dimensions.

Thank you John,

I don't have Handbrake...but will look into it if this problem persists. I'm new to this whole proxy business.

These are 360 view files. They start as separate 2880x2880 round fisheye clips and are stitched into the 3840x1920 360 view files by Kodak's free, beta, stitching software.

It looks like my punt---rendering the two halves I was able to edit, and combining them in a third project---is working and I'm rendering the final video now.

I have another dive's worth of clips (these are SCUBA videos) to work on, and will try this all over again with them. It's not clear whether I'm hitting an effective limit to the number of files I can include in a project file (imposed by my computer and/or this file format?) or just screwed things up the way I was creating the proxies for this project.

QuickTime for Windows is a 32 bit application and it does have a limit to the number of files in a project. It's possible that has something to do with the problem. Search the forum and you'll find discussions about it.

john_dennis,

3d87c4,
Can your Kodak shoot a different container, or can you convert the source files in GoPro Studio?

3d87c4 wrote on 6/6/2016, 11:45 PM
The Kodak stitching software can create smaller files...but not different formats.

I tried the free GoPro studio and it ignored the files. I'm not on the latest version though.

In case you're curious, here's my first SP360 4K video. I'm stitching the clips for my second now.

I installed Handbrake.

Any suggestions on what to do with it, before I start tinkering? Preferred format to convert to is the first question, I suppose...

Ran my second dives clips through Handbrake and the editing was a breeze.
