GoPro + 3D beam splitter workflow?

So...I bought a Russian 3D beam splitter cheap on ebay and am trying to see if I can use it with my GoPro 3+ black. I have a Kula Deeper on order, so this is a workflow exercise while I'm waiting.

Here are pictures of the unit attached to the GoPro using 52mm filter ring adaptors and some paper shims:

The issue, of course, is the GoPro field of view is too wide. Here's a frame grab showing what the GoPro sees at in the 1080 narrow setting:

The usable left and right images are only about 500x900 pixels.

When I feed that into Vegas as a side-by-side 3D clip I can't eliminate the dark region between the images and the floating windows can't trim enough off the sides---a sliver of the wider image remains & the stereo window can't be set properly.

The best I've been able to do is read it in as a 1080 clip, crop it to about 1280x960, render, then read the rendered clip into a 3D project as a side-by-side full. Alternatively, I could crop and render the left and right images separately and feed them into a 3D project.

Is there a way to do this in a single project?

In a 3D project the pan/crop pop-up work area only displays the left image---is there a way to pan/crop the left and right images explicitely?

Here is a yt video showing the raw clips before and after I opened the beam splitter up and adjusted its mirror alignment. (I have to tweak it some more.)

Here's what I got editing the second clip directly in a 3D project:

and here's what I got after cropping it, rendering, and then editing it in a 3D project (I forgot to mask out the center region here):

Still tinkering...

Here, I cropped and rendered the left and right images into separate 550x1080 files then combined them in a 550x900 3D project:

Not a lot of pixels to work with.

A friend suggested I try some digital zooming:

Here's a 1.5x zoom: crop left and right image to 550x720 and render to separate files. Combine these into an 825x1080 3D project.

Here I jumped to the logical (ridiculous) extreme: cropped left and right images to 550x310, rendered to separate files, then combined them in a 1920x1080 3D project---a 3.5x digital zoom!!!!

Water's too green to go diving today so I'm still nerding out with my Russian beam splitter.

Opened the beam splitter and cleaned all the mirrors and windows. I took pictures of the innerds and will post them in a bit.

I went through three iterations of adjusting the toe-in and filming test clips to get to this point. There's still room for improvement...but I have other things I want to try.

Here are three clips strung together using my 1.5x digital zoom trick (render 550x720 clips as 825x1080).

I realized that my Looxcie HD cameras have a narrower field of view so may work better. It won't fit in the GoPro-52mm ring adapter, but I have an idea how to make an adapter for that.

Comments anybody?

I'm still not happy with the workflow---crop and render left and right images to separate files, then combine in the final 3D project---and would appreciate alternative suggestions.

I have a Kula Deeper on order, but they've had production issues with their mirrors delaying delivery. I'm hoping I get better results with it...but they warned me GoPros have too wide a field of view when I ordered it.

Oh, and I verified that my son's Nikon D3100 has the right filter ring size...but he needs it for a school project and won't let me try the beam splitter on it 'til he's done.
