Subject: Cannot open aac audio files

I resently purchased Sony Imagination Studio Suite 3 which among other things contains Sound Forge Audio Studio 10 and ACID Music Studio 8.0.

Sound Forge Audio Studio 10 has according to the spec. support for aac files, but I get the message “format unknown”, but ACID Music Studio 8.0 can open the file without any problems.
It is strange ACID can open and play the file but not SF.

I have for over a month ago send a mail to Sony customer support to get help but not got any response yet.
Therefore I try Forum.

Has anyone got the same problem?

I am running windows 7, 64 bit system with i5 CPU 2,40GHz and 8 GB RAM

What is the file's extension? AAC files are usually have a <*.mp4> or <*.m4u>. If that's the case, try changing the extension.
The above AAC file types will open in SF-Pro. Don't know about SF-AS. You may have to installed Quicktime as well, though I'm not sure... I can't access my audio computer remotely to check things out further..

Thanks for reply, but the suggestions do not solve the problem.

aac is the file extension and stands for Advanced Audio Coding and is very common.
I have no problems playing the file in e.g. Windows media player and editing the file in other audio editors like AVS Audio editor.

Changing the extention to mp4 or m4a gives the error “File is an unsupported format”
Extension m4u is unknown to SF and also SF-AS.

Since SF-AS and SF-Pro knows the aac file format I now assume it is an error in Sound Forge Audio Studio, which Sony should solve.

In what program was the AAC file encoded? Can you post it on-line?
Like I stated, do you have Quicktime installed, SF supports the MOV format too, but not w/o Quicktime.

Audio aac files are extracted from a movie recorded using Sony HD camera.

Yes, I have Quicktime installed playing mov files.
FS can open and play the audio track from those mov files.

I have made a small audio aac file with about 30 sec. of music, but I cannot see how I can attach the file to Forum. I think it is not allowed.

If you mail to me, I can reply with the file attached or is there another way?

Set up a file sharing account. Lots of free ones to choose from these days... Dropbox, 4-Shared, Skydrive, ect. For instance, Dropbox gives you up to 10 or 15GB for free w/ file sizes up to 2GB. If you have a Hotmail or Livemail e-mail account, you already have Skydrive. Google has also just recently released a file sharing service.

Thanks for the hints for sharing documents.

I was contacted by Sony support and have send a small audio file of about 30 sec. (Les Champs Elyssees_part.aac) to the support guys.

Here is a link to Google documents, where the same aac audio file can be downloaded.

Hi all,

I have got an answer from Sony support:

The file you sent over is an ADTS file. Issues with importing this format are listed in the known issue database, to be resolved in a future update of the application.

I have asked when I can expect an update of FS and expect an answer soon.

Thanks for all responses.

To rraud,

You are right about not holding my breath.

Sony has not any plan when to release SF with this issue solved.

Can't hold my breath any longer.... Santa is bringing in 2016 and these posts 2012. I have SF 11 latest and it does NOT open aac files recorded on say an iPhone, whether one changes the extension or not. It will open mp4 aac files (albeit slowly) say dumped from a video time line. This is a necessity if using Prem Pro for example. The quicktime element with FCP also doesn't seem to present a prob either, unless I have some underlying prog installed or 'not' installed, whichever the case might be and of which I am unaware of.
Wake up Sony. It is not rocket science... Oh.... um... er... maybe it is...
