win 10?

ok, opening a can of worms...

with the advent of 10 around the corner, and all my pc's eligible for upgrade, i was wondering if anyone out there has actually been using the beta releases with vegas 12 / 13?

i am not likely to be the first kid on the block to try out the new os on my main pc's, however, i do have an old tosh running vegas 12 and have read that 10 is apparently a little snappier than 7 on older hardware. so i thought i might just give it a whirl. yes, i do have an image file just in case ;-)

I have been using 10 for a while and in it's current version in is a pleasure to use and very stable. I use Vegas, Premiere and Davinci..I hesitate to say best OPsys ever only because I might jinx it.

What bothers me intensly about Windows 10 is after the first or second year you will get a message saying if you want to continue using Windows ten it is available for a small yearly fee. Updates are free. This will happen in spite of what the PR says. Like the hit man says to the victim just before he pulls the trigger, "It's just business".

Microsoft did say at one time that they see Windows 10 as a "service" and we all equate services with "subscription" fees. They said that's not what they meant but who knows what they'll pull in the future.

The problem with the subscription model is that if every vendor does it, then every month you will pay subscription fees for your OS, and your word processor, and your graphics editor, and your NLE, and your DAW, etc., and by the time everyone takes their fee for the 100 or so programs on your computer only business who can write off the expense will be able to afford to run a Windows computer every month. IMHO, it will be the final nail in the Windows coffin because consumers will just get fed up and buy an Android or iOS tablet and leave their Windows desktop behind (which is already happening anyway).

Most consumers are trying to figure out how to reduce their monthly bills not how to increase them. :(

From all I’ve heard about it, “win 10” sounds more like “lose 10” to me.

Surely the best solution is to make sure you have a good image of your current system. Then update to 10 and grab the serial number allocated.
If you don't get on with 10 simply revert back to your current system. If you later wish to use a clean install of W10 then grab an .iso from Microsoft and use the serial number you were given.

Have been using W10 preview for a while now. Have a dual boot system on separate HD's. Selectable in bios at boot. Only problems have been when W10 updates. After the update I can no longer revert back to a W7 HD via bios. The W7 boot gets screwed. Last time the W7 HD was a right off. Blue screen on boot.

Maybe I have been unlucky but now remove W7 disc whenever using W10.

Wait...so MS is going to get everybody to upgrade to a "free" version of windows 10. And then in like a year or two, after you're settled into 10 and really can't go back to your old OS, start CHARGING a yearly subscription price.

Great plan for them. Everybody is on the same version all the time and they can calculate their guaranteed revenue like the changing of the seasons.

I'm going to hold out with my Win 7 and 8.1 versions as long as possible. Neither of these operating systems is "in my way" at any time so I suspect I'll be good for quite a few years with them.

I apparently got in a little too early for running apps like NLEs with the Windows 10 Technical Preview and lost interest when it just didn't work. It's likely I'll buy at least one OEM copy of Windows 10 when it's released because of my the fear that Microsoft will invalidate my Windows 7 Professional license if I upgrade to the free Windows 10.

I'm not fond of a subscription model, but I'll deal with that eventuality when the time comes.

I still have one machine that runs perfectly on Windows XP. I've been looking for a reason to change the O/S but have not found one, yet. It ain't broke.

I still have a machine in the garage that I could use for capturing audio that runs Windows 98. I use the spot in the garage as a place-holder so my wife doesn't fill the space. Some day the space will be filled with a NAS / media server.

John, My understanding is that those users of W10 preview will also get a free licence in due course. I guess that I'll run it once a month to see what transpires.

The current W7 licence allows you to run two instances of the OS on separate drives selectable in bios at boot. GV Edius will only allow one version of their software on a drive. Hence the need for a boot choice.

Your idea that the W7 license will be invalidated might well happen but there will be a great number of users out there who may have to revert back to W7.
Currently W7 Pro runs a virtual XP. I have some product which will not run on W7 but are needed for maintenance work. Not sure if W7 Pro will translate W10 Pro.
Either way I would need a virtual machine that would give me access to XP. Not to sure I would want a virtual W7 Pro using the inbuilt virtual XP all running within W10.

Taking this thought a little further the W7 license would need remain valid as it would be required to activate the virtual OS. Rather like the installation of XP within W7 Home running within VMware. This needed a real XP serial for activation.

Not too much trust in MS?

It may not be that simple. Software doesn't work from just a serial number anymore. It is also tied to a machine by virtue of the hardware configuration and requires validation via the internet. There may not even be a serial number. Win 10 upgrade may be applied like a normal Windows update.
