Subject:Creating 5.1 audio CD????

I have a copy of Soft Encode, but have never really put it to much use. As an experiment I would like to create a standard audio CD and encode a recent live concert I mastered as 5.1. I planned on playing back the audio CD through my DVD player and feeding that into my receiver, a five-year-old Kenwood, that has Dolby Pro Logic, but none of the latest and greatest. It also does not take digital/optical directly in. My first question is whether I can save the output of Soft Encode in such a way as to burn it to a CD using CD Architect or Easy CD Creator. The .AC3 file extension may be confusing me here. I'm also wondering if a 5.1 CD can be played on a standard audio CD player and fed into a receiver that does Dolby Pro Logic decoding to get the full 5.1.

Is the 5.1 format 'really' all the channels separate or are they encoded to two channels and decoded when played back.

I have the master stereo mix done in Vegas Audio. I was thinking (maybe wrongly :-) that I can Render the necessary channels as individual tracks, then move them into Soft Encode (SE). I've already done a test with two channels and SE allows me to pull them in. Once I did this I can see all the Encode and Decode options. At this point I'm pretty lost in an ocean of options. The Help is there, but I haven't been able to translate to exactly what I need. The manual isn't much help for a neophyte.

Any suggestions appreciated or references or links to other sources of info.

Thanks!

You cannot burn a 5.1 mix to a standard audio CD using CD Architect or any other audio CD burning program. Red book standard calls for stereo audio. There is also no way to take a stereo mix and convert it to 5.1 using Soft Encode.

Forget what the other reply said. You can burn 5.1 to an ordinary CD, I have done it myself. However if you have no digital inputs and your receiver only handles Pro Logic then you cant use 5.1 you will have to encode in Pro Logic. If you give your email address I have a really good web page that is no longer available online but I saved it and it has step by step instructions about burning AC3 to a normal CD. Hope this has helped.

Dear Users,

1/ open SE and import your tracks(MONO)FR,FL,C,RL,RR,LFe..
2/ Set encoding sample rate to 44.1KHz at 16bit.
3/ Leave the channel at 6Channels (3/2/1).
4/ encode the traks.
5/ burn with cd software as normal CD.
6/ put cd in decoder and playback. some systems work some don't.

I also would like to try out the 5.1 audio. When I set the settings you have called out all I get is noise, I'm sure it must be in the selections. I did not understand *** BE CAREFUL OF FULL SCALE DIGITAL NOISE....0dB. Maybe this is why I am getting noise in all channels. Please HELP!

Thanks,
Rick_D
