Does Vegas support BWF ?

fosko wrote on 9/21/2014, 11:14 PM
The manual for Tascam 60 says:
Marks added to BWF format WAV files by this unit during
recording are stored in the file. These marks can be used when
playing back the file using software or equipment that supports
the BWF format.

I'd like to be able to 'mark' a position on a file and be able to go straight there in Vegas.

As far as I know Vegas can only read BWF timecode and sync the start to the Vegas T/L ruler.

Vegas does not have the ability to write BWF metadata.

I don't know about the DR-60, but in my experience with the Tascam DR-40 and 680, markers are displayed in Vegas and Sound Forge... and can be saved with the VP project file or regular WAVE some other file formats in SF. (as long as 'Save metadata with file) is enabled)
MV is correct (as usual), VP cannot create a BWF, though it can read TC and other metadata on one.

I use a Tascam HS-P82 eight-track recorder and routinely drop its native BWF files onto Vegas timelines. While I don't trigger the marker feature whilst recording audio, I can confirm that Vegas displays the markers: the P82 pre-records 5 seconds in its buffer, and I see the pre-record markers in my BWF files while on the timeline.

I'm curious. This is new to me.How do you see it? Is it on the wave form or is it on the video channel (and I'm assuming these markers don't print to the final?)

@fosko, in the example below, I dropped a three channel BWF from my Tascam onto a Vegas timeline. The 5 second pre-record buffer is marked by a vertical red flag and line, i.e., a media marker. I have not investigated whether markers triggered by me during a recording appear the same.

The embedded "media markers" appear only on the audio events as shown. I can use the excellent and free Timeline Tools to convert these media markers to 'regular' markers, i.e., the sort you get when pressing "M" anywhere on the timeline.

Finally, you are correct: the markers don't print to the final.

Great thanks~~~
In a moment of DUH~! I realized I already have a Tascam DR40 which also has a "marker". I just tried it and got the same results. The only minor issue is I can hear a slight audible click when I hit the MARK button. I'm not sure if this is part of the coding or instrument noise since I'm using the onboard mic. I'll try it with a plug in and find out.

Tested it with a Plug in mic.. works fine. This is just what I needed.
THANKS!

Glad to hear it (pun intended).

Wanted to start a new thread..but I'm trying to be energy conscious :-)

If I have a line going into an audio recorder (Tascam DR40) and then go line out into my Camera...will the BWF transfer out along with the audio ??

1) I know the answer is try and see, but I don't have my equipment with me and thought someone would know off hand.

2) The reason I want to do this is because I record an hour lecture. I use the audio recorder to mark the spots I have to go back to in post and add the notes in lower 3rds. Also, it's my main audio but there is some minor drifting out of sync. I'm thinking if I can somehow get this direct audio signal AND the markers in BWF format it will save me from having to sync manually (which really isn't that much time but every moment counts) and being able to go directly to a spot for edits instead of listening to the whole hour again (which will save a LOT of time).

No. Remember that audio out from your Tascam -- unless you're purely digital, which you're not -- is analog. So what you're feeding your camera is, at best, an analog stereo signal. It carries no digital information because nothing is digitized, such as the meta-data you want from the BWF file.

In other words, your camera and Tascam both have A/D converters for recording digital audio, but the two 'talk' to each other in analog only. Might as well have two soup cans on either end of a string. You get sound only.

AFIK no digital streaming protocol (AES, TDIF, MADI etc) carries BWF chunks with the signal - the BWF chunks are inside the file WAV header, therefore only travel with a direct data file transfer.

Thanks.
That's what I thought, but was worth a shot.

For some obscure reason, Vegas still doesn't export BWF format, even if it's been discussed for years now, and even if it's the main format used in ''pro'' (I mean, ''real pro'') environment.
