Subject:Last part of clip goes silent???

I lose the last 5 seconds to last 2 minutes of a song when I save it. What's going on??

I am re-doing some older files. Balancing and clipping etc. To ensure I don't damage my files I automatically "save file as" the same name but with a 31 behind it. This way I know which file is the latest. Example: Test 31.mp3. Next time I save it it will be "Test 32.mp3".

This is BEFORE I do any changes to the song. Sometimes when I magnify the view with the mouse wheel I notice the last part is missing and can't be found. If I leave it full length view i don't lose anything. I am working with standard song files. 3-5 mins in length.

Is this a new problem or am doing something wrong. Did I hit a key unknowingly. Because this is happening to ALL my files.

It definitely shouldn't be happening, and i've occasionally seen this happen with some oddly compressed files being saved to MP3.

However, why are you saving as MP3? You should be using an uncompressed file (such as WAV) as your source and saving all your intermediate work uncompressed as well. Don't save to MP3 until you have a final finished version that you won't be editing anymore, and still save an uncompressed copy as well.

So, go back to your original, and if it's not a WAV file, save it as one. Then do your editing on that file.

Thanks Kelly,
Sorry for the delay.
True, I was editing the mp3. I didn't know otherwise. Thanks.
I was saving to a final. ( I thought).
So...
Should I save from mp3 to wav to mp3?

If you only have MP3 as a source format, then you are stuck with that. When you are working in Sf it *is* WAV, so no point in doing that as a discrete step. What Chieny is saying is that MP3 files are already sonically-compromised, and re-coding to an MP3 again further deteriorates the end sound quality. But is all you have is MP3, then you are stuck with that.

Re the shortening, you haven't got a tick box in the save dialogue saying to save/render 'looped region only ' by any chance ?

Geoff, i have had a few cases in which editing and resaving MP3 or M4A files results in the last part being muted. Saving the file as WAV as the first step, then reloading the new WAV file for editing and resaving, seems to avoid the problem. I think i've only experienced this in Sound Forge 9 though.

*shrug*

And by the way, that's "Chienie", not "Cheny" ;)
