A trivial matter with the Help file

PeterMac wrote on 1/30/2002, 4:22 AM
Hi

Every time I open the VV Help file I get an Internet Explorer error saying 'Class not registered', Line 315, then all this junk:

mk:@MSITStore:C:\Program%20Files\Sonic%20Foundry\Shared%20Plug-Ins\Help%20Files\vegas30.chm::/WelcomeScreen.htm

After that the Help seems OK, but it happens every time and it's a pain.
Anyone know why, or what to do to fix it?

Peter,

Perhaps it would help to update Internet Explorer to the latest version, if you haven't already. Otherwise, reinstall it. Classes are registered during installation, so an upgrade or reinstallation should do the trick.

Windows Update Site:

Hope this helps,

At least yours works. Mine disappeared a long time ago and hasn't come back. It doesn't error out or do anything at all . No big deal as I have the .pdf manual on line, and I suppose a reinstall would fix it.

Hello

See ya, Rockit

This one isn't familiar, but I think it's related to the DHTML effects in the splash screen.

Could you please tell me what OS and version of IE you're running?

Thanks!

Hmmm. This is a different issue, but I'm sure we can fix it. The problem with copying only the VEGAS30.CHM to a different folder is that it will break some links in your help file.

Rockitglider--Just out of curiosity, do you have both of the following folders on your machine?
C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Shared Plug-Ins\Help Files

and

C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Help Files

That will tell us what we need to do to resolve this for you.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Pete,

In order to help us determine the source of the problem, could you tell us what version of Internet Explorer you're using?

Thanks,
Stephanie

Hi Stephanie

As far as I'm aware it's the latest - 6.0.2600.0000

Maybe that's it: Bill's broken something else. Again ;-)

Okay, so you and I match, then, and it's working fine on my machine--don't we just always say that? :)

After some digging, it seems that it's possible that a DLL may not be registered on your machine (let's hope that's it--the next step they mentioned was reinstalling IE).

If you wouldn't mind, could you try the following?

(1) Search your machine for comcat.dll. The most recent version should be in c:\winnt\system32. On my machine, the version of this file is 5.0.2195.1, and the Modified date is Friday, May 04, 2001, 1:05:02 PM.

(2) From the Start menu, choose Run.

(3) In the Run dialog, type the following: regsvr32 c:\winnt\system32\comcat.dll

This should register the DLL.

Please let me know if this works for you.

Thanks,
Kevin

Okay--this won't hurt a bit. :)

Please copy the contents of C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Help Files to C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Shared Plug-Ins\Help Files.

After you've done that, I have a Registry patch that you'll need to run. If you don't mind, please e-mail me at kevinc@sonicfoundry.com, and I'll send you the patch.

Thanks, and sorry for the inconvenience.

Kevin

Well, comcat.dll is where is should be. For good measure, I've registered it again, but, alas, still no joy: get the same message. The splash screen comes up followed immediately by the error message. (I have a jpg (26K) of the dialog, but can't see how to send it to you. I thought it might give you more of a clue)

As a matter of interest, I've just copied the vegas30.chm file to my Sony Vaio laptop, which has IE 5.5. It works perfectly there! (And I can now see the fade in logo, which is the bit that's failing) But you say you are also using IE 6.0 and you have no problem...?

I'll try a reinstall of IE, though I'm doubtful if that's what it is. Think of anything else?

PeterMac wrote on 2/1/2002, 4:03 AM
I've done the re-install, but without success.
Actually, it's a moot point whether anything got changed. As you're doubtless aware, the installation of IE6 is done over the web. This time all that seemed to happen was that the installer had a quick look around, thought: 'Yep, all present and correct' and then exited.

I really don't know what to do now?

-Pete

PS When's the update making an appearance? It was supposed to be end of January and it's now Feb.
SonyKevin wrote on 2/1/2002, 8:52 AM
Peter--

Yes. I'm also using IE 6 with no troubles. I'll keep digging and see if we can get this fixed for you.

The next step is a reinstallation of IE 6.0. I saw from your next message that it was unsuccessful for you, however. If your computer previously had IE 5.5, you could uninstall IE6 (effectively reverting to 5.5) and then update to IE 6.0.

I'll continue to look for a fix in the interim.

Thanks,
kevin

Well, now it gets interesting.
I uninstalled IE 6.0, which in my case put me back in IE 5.0, and the logo dissolve worked! No java moans at all.
I then reinstalled IE 6.0 - and the error came back :(

Now this re-installation is a bit of a misnomer. I don't think the IE 6 files were ever removed from the machine, they were just put on one side until I saw the error of my ways. Certainly, it only took a couple of minutes to do it - not nearly long enough to download the umpteen meg that constitutes IE 6.0

I suppose I really need to force a brand new installation of IE 6, but I don't know where it's stashing the installation files and settings.

What a pain for something so cosmetic.

That _is_ a pain. Sorry about the hassle--I create the help using separate machines with different versions of IE to ensure that it just works, but something's definitely gone awry with your IE6 installation.

I've forwarded this thread to our Installation guru. I'm hoping she can help you get IE set straight. I am still looking for a less painful fix. though.

Hi Kevin

I found out where all the files were and, after going back yet again to IE5, deleted them. This then forced a new download from Microsoft. But it didn't do any good!

If we knew the file/DLL responsible, we could copy it over from the IE5 installation... Can your people say which it is?

Kind regards

I had the same problem using Internet Exploder 6. I re-installed VV3 and the problem went away.
PeterMac wrote on 2/1/2002, 12:49 PM
Tried that, didn't work.

I dunno, maybe if we knew what 'class' it was that wasn't registered, it might be possible to register it manually...

I just realised that the help was not working for me but as I had to reinstall VV I just checked and it's working now??? (IE 6)

Heh. Copying mine the _other_ way solved my problem. VV3 help works for me now.

Peter--I'm going to try to break my machine today to reproduce the error you're seeing, and I hope to have a quick fix.

Out of curiosity, are you running another browser in addition to IE? It's odd that reinstalling Vegas and IE didn't resolve the issue for you.

Thanks,
Kevin

PeterMac wrote on 2/4/2002, 1:40 PM
Nope, just the one, Kevin - IE6

Like I mentioned before, if I revert to my previous version of IE (5.0) the help 'fade in' works just fine. Likewise, if I run the help on my Sony Vaio, which uses IE 5.5, then there's no problem either.

Is it worth identifying the 'class' that's complained of, the one supposedly not registered, and just register it manually?

Good luck, anyway!
