If we would have started to hold our breath 4 years ago, we'd be dead by now.

EXACTLY!
Would be very kind (and respectful from Sony) to obtain a clear answer: is ACID beeing killed* or "re oriented" for music beginners with the music studio product line ?
Or are we going to have a full version of VEGAS incorporating all the features of ACID?

Thank you

* I remember a few years ago I have spent about 350 euros for ACID (and all updates since) which is now less than 150 euros new !

If 5 years of "nothingness" isn't truly crystal clear - I really do not know what else could be.

I gave up on ACID and moved to Studio One. However, with the new version of Studio (10) I couldn't pass up the $29 "upgrade" since it included a free loop library of my choice and had upgraded the studio version to include some more features. I have to say that I've been opening my old projects to port them over to Studio One, and Music Studio 10 has proven to be a very, very stable revision and it even seems more "responsive" if that makes sense. I also been able to load up KONTAKT with several instruments with no lockups or bogging down. It's made finishing things up and moving them over to Studio One a new pleasure, and I find it both encouraging (and sad) that Music Studio seems to be the focus of their development, as it is a much newer program than Acid Pro 7 at this point. Encouraging because with this new release, maybe it is a precursor to a new 64 bit version of ACID Pro, which I would still probably buy at a reasonable upgrade price. ACID is still the fastest way for me to get started on anything, but Studio One is the more professional tool in the long run (and for some reason, it sounds better reproducing the low end)

They could make a proper announcement - they've done it before.

I can just picture it now, front page of SCS, big banner, big announcement:
'Announcing Your New Creative Partner' ACID PRO 8.' (64 bit).

Drool.

No but all jokes aside.

They could make a proper announcement - they've done it before.

What announcement are you hoping to see. AP7 is still available and AP8 is not (and may never be).

I still do not understand why people think Sony should be doing something here. If the current version is available for sale - it is what it is. Even tho 5 years have passed and NO future version is yet available - that does not automatically imply Sony should issue some huge press release saying Acid is done.

I think peoples sense of entitlement is getting the better of them. While I realize we have all paid our money for AP7 - that still doesn't make a bit of difference with respect to a future version.

There were no promises, guarantees or implication of AP8 so people need to relax. Sony owes us nothing and by the looks of things - that's exactly what we got.

You don't see Adobe making "retirement" statements about Photoshop - simply because a future version has yet to appear on the horizon.

What announcement are you hoping to see.

Something like this:

Cinescore Software Discontinued

As of December 31, 2009, Cinescore software and Theme Packs are no longer available for purchase from Sony Creative Software. Cinescore continues to create exciting soundtracks worldwide, but it's time to move forward. We're currently developing next generation music creation technology and the discontinued version of Cinescore will be the last.

Sony could simply say they will continue to publish loop libraries but Acid is done. I seem to remember, years ago, Peter saying that Acid had a future. It's about time Sony said what that future is. As for Adobe and Photoshop, can you really imagine them going five years without an update?

Acid - in it's current varied forms - still has a active (and I assume profitable) place in the Sony lineup, loop libraries are available and as far as we know - this IS the future. As it stands right now - Sony would look like a bunch of idiots issuing any kind of "discontinued" notice for ACID.

Now - if they decided to ice the entire app lineup - and no ACID product of any kind was available at all - then it makes complete sense.

But again just because you and I (and bunch of other fans) are not getting Acid Pro 8 (maybe never) - does not mean we are entitled to any explanation whatsoever.

Maybe the real reason is embarrassing. Maybe the real reason is the chairman of Sony came over for a visit and waved his hand and made it disappear.

You guys also seem to forget that cancellation news or failure news or any kind of bad news - is not good for a big public company like Sony. Issuing press releases about product failures is never a good thing.

This much is clear - Sony has had almost 5 years to say something and they have not. Could be the chairman in Japan telling everyone to keep their yaps shut. Accept it or don't.

As for Adobe and Photoshop, can you really imagine them going five years without an update?

Why not? Stuff happens all the time in software dev. Markets change, people change - everything changes. While highly unlikely (since Photoshop is a bread and butter app for them) - even if Adobe did decide to go 3 or 5 years - they still wouldn't need to explain anything to anybody. It's their app and they can do what they please with it.

Just as ACID is with SMS. Buying a license doesn't make us share holders or place us anywhere in the loop to get the reasons for "why" something happened.

I say - stick to making music with whatever you have - and leave this stuff to the folks that make these decisions.

Nice speculation about the past. "Why" is certainly interesting but people are asking about "What" and "When". You write about entitlement, earlier I mentioned decency. What a sad world we live in when decency has no place in big business.

Well - The "what" and the "when" are crystal clear to me.

What = No AP8 and When = Never.

Not once thru all these threads and diatribe that we have been yakking about in the last 4+ years - has there ever been even the slightest hint of "what" or "when".

Sony has no reason whatsoever to be secretive about anything after this amount of time. And let's be honest - this is really 6 years now as AP7 came out in Oct 2008.

Let me ask - would you really feel special or relieved (or more "included" in the process) if Sony plastered a big banner on the site saying there will be no AP8?

I think if that did come to past - all it would do is lead to a whole new crew of complainers rolling in here demanding to know why.

As far as "decency" goes - I have never seen much it ever in any business. Bottom line is about making money - not holding customers hands.

It's been 6 years guys. This was so done a long long time ago. Time to move on.

VP

What will arrive first? AP8 or Half Life 3?

I wonder if they would have to start over to make a 64 bit version?

What about Reason 8? That appears to be coming out in September. If it can do the awesome pitch and tempo matching like Acid that would be cool. More so the loop preview feature. I love that. A must have.

"and some soon-to-be announced applications"

Considering everything prior to that in the list is a new version of a package mentioned by name, i'm sure they would have said "ACID Pro 8" if they were going to show it. Much more likely that these are something new and different instead of ACID.

And that this is International Broadcaster's Convention (IBC) - I can't think of an app that could be farther away from the "broadcast" realm than ACID.

I agree with Chien - if (and that's a very BIG if) Acid mattered at all in the grand scheme of things at Sony - a new version of Acid Pro would garner it's own big announcement rather than being implied as part of some small print at the bottom of an IBC announcement.

My money would be on a big fat empty comment on anything to do with Acid...including the sound of crickets and sagebrush tumbling down the hallway.

Really @ this point if Acid is released in any new form and is not also available for Mac i really wouldn't care because i have ALREADY moved on. but lets not get this statement wrong i would jump all over it if it does become available for Mac OS, i always loved acid just had to stop using it because i switched to a Mac computer. i was glad when Sound Forge became Mac OS friendly and immediately jumped on it. Been using sound Forge and Acid since they both came out.

So not a beta tester yet :- ).

According to the last post here:https://www.facebook.com/SonySoftware/posts/10154615214605118

'IMSTA Sony booth says it's scheduled for release in 2015 with mac support.'

Like many members have stated here, I have moved on and am using Sonar X3 Producer now, it loads all the 64 bit plugins fine and doesen't crash at all.

I just wish Sonar could import the Acid projects. Now I have to export all the elements seperatly from Acid to Sonar to replicate the timeline there.

I have many long running soundtrack projects created with Acid. I have made many sequences and instrumentations in Acid that I use on other tracks. Now I must inport those to Sonar the hard way. And re create all the FX plugins etc.

If another Acid Pro comes then I will have to move again from Sonar to Acid (if it is worth the upgrade).

Like Vocal Point, I have no idea of it ever coming. Except that post above. It's a pitty.

If it does come as 64 bit based and if it is stable as Sonar X3 Producer then I shall purchase the upgrade.

VMP, a fan of Acid Pro, already since the Sonic Foundry days.
