SOT: Thumbs up for this forum

smhontz wrote on 5/11/2014, 9:01 PM
I've been on this forum since Vegas 3, and I've got to say that this forum is a daily must-read for me. Not just for the actual Vegas tips but also for all the "OT" discussions that also pertain to stuff I'm interested in as a computer guy.

It's so nice to have a forum where I can read about Firefox, backup methods, hard drive reliability, sound editing, amazing videos, filmmaking techniques etc, etc. I totally respect the opinions of the people here because I see how willing they are to jump in and help people with any kind of question, and they sometimes go to great lengths to dive into a problem.

So, kudos to Sony for letting this forum just "be", and to all those who participate and keep the quality of the posts so high.

I am guessing Leslie is referring to Creative cow.

Likewise, I agree. I have had some great assistance from people here on this forum. I only hope I can return the favour in some way.

I would contrast it with the Blackmagic forum, of which I have recently dropped my membership. One of the most poisonous places on the web.

grazie, i was booted off cow for suggesting someone 'rtfm' when they asked about (straightforward) keyboard shortcuts. iirc ;-)

frankly if one can't voice ones opinion that simply (ie. no flaming, bad language, vilification, etc.,) in a forum then there's obviously no concept of 'free' speech.

ok, i've had my moments here, and been suitably chastised, but all in all, this is the only place i feel 'at home' with like minded farts....

Nothing is wrong with over at the cow Ushere. You can voice your opinion
quite well (respectfully) over there without being booted off.

well steve, my experience tells me otherwise...

to be pedantic, i wasn't 'booted off', rather i left because i object to having my post removed.

the same has happened here; with a post removed, but i could clearly see (after the fact) that it might have seemed inappropriate.

While I agree that this Sony forum is a great community... the Creative COW has done an outstanding job of keeping the tone professional, the posts on topic, and genuinely helping people when they ask a question. It is not a place to randomly express your opinions. It's a place for people to get help with their video editing problems no matter how trivial they seem. Condescending posts are not tolerated. Off topic posts are not tollerated. There are other forums for that. I don't see how posts about recent changes in Firefox help you edit video. You are correct, you wouldn't find that on the COW. It's a forum about providing a non confrontational environment for editors to get help with their video problems an not be judged.

Then I would recommend that you never even think about posting to Stack Overflow. Not only will a RTFM post be pulled but any post that isn't directly related to answering the question will be pulled. Opinions aren't allowed in any way, shape, or form. Questions that illicit opinions or arguments are pulled. Answers that are off-topic from the question are pulled... and guess what? Stack Overflow is the #1 place to get your programming questions answered bar none!!! Keeping people "on task" is a noble effort in world full of distractions.

Another thing I like about Creative Cow is that you know who you're talking too.

whilst i applaud 'professional' forums, and in my own way try to help whenever i can on those i do subscribe to, i also find many of them a little too 'dry' and at, times self righteous.

yes, i do realise there are probably 'other' forums for 'off topic' subjects, but here at scs i not only find many intelligent people who happen to be in the same profession as myself, (ie. on a similar wavelength), but learn a great deal about what interests them outside of vegas.

whilst i realise we are all here to advance our, and each others knowledge regarding vegas, i really do enjoy the ot's, the must see videos, useful info about pc's in general, and the flexibility within threads.

to draw a rather poor analogy, i find this place the local relaxed pub (coffee shop?) for editors and indies, rather than the formal 'club/society' atmosphere of many other forums.

Leslie, your post has nailed it!

This Forum

has Decorum -

It's been a home internet "base" for me for many years. Like you, I love many things here, including the fact that, as well as Vegas issues, I can post that I've stuffed up something in my Windows OS, and know that I'll get help, and it's usually very good help.

... and without OT posts, the extra dimensions that make this Forum special could not have blossomed.

I couldn't decide between Pub or Coffee Shop ..... it's both.

+1

I appreciate the social aspect of this forum. There are things I know and things I don't. I never been belittled because of my opinions. or even if I happen to be totally wrong about something I state. (If I have been belittled, I'm not astute enough to pick up on it.)

When you see people who have been helped in the past jumping in to offer assistance or opinions, you know its helping the forum evolve and survive. On some others, the protocol seems to be: ask your question, make way for the established "experts" to reply and everyone else be quiet or face the consequences.

I find this forum very helpful too, including OT threads that often help widen my horizons with the latest video editing news that is usually relevant to Vegas Pro. I'm really impressed that Vegas developers are trying to engage a lot more with us on the forum. With the stability of VP13 they've done a great job in refreshing the brand. Long may that continue!

My only criticism of Creative Cow is that I don't find their layout very user friendly - nested threads. It's Vegas forum isn't frequented as much as here either.

Actually this thread would not be allowed on some forums.

I admin a railway forum where everyone must use their real name, off topic discussions are tolerated and humour is encouraged.

However any anti-social behaviour is stamped on pretty quickly and for abuse there is a one-strike-and-you-are-out policy.
