How do I "flip" over a portion of a clip?

I'm trying to simulate what could best be described as a in-place "card flip".

I have a 1920x1080 video clip. I use the Mask in Event Pan/Crop to select just a portion of my clip to make it look like a playing card, and use Position in Event Pan/Crop (disabling "Size about center") to position it on the left side on the screen.

I repeat this twice, so I have three cards spread out across the screen.

Now, I want to flip them over, one by on, IN PLACE, to show a different (but exact same size) clip underneath each card - exactly what you would see if you were to do this with playing cards.

I want to see the flip in 3D- i.e, the clip should get narrower until it is on edge and then get bigger again as the new clip is brought in.

The effect is what the "3D Blinds" Spin preset gives you when your video clip takes up the entire screen - but, that flips across the entire screen, and when you just have a slice of video, it doesn't flip in place.

3D track motion doesn't do it either, as it also rotates the entire screen.

Is there any way to do this in Vegas?

Sounds like you're on the right track w/ masking the section of the clip you want to "flip".

If I'm understanding correctly what you want to do, you'll need to copy the original clip to another track below the original and edit the bottom clip. The bottom clip will show thru the masked out section. you may be able to use cookie cutter w/ some feather to hide the edges.

Using Vegas I created a grid of 45 cards that flip in place to simulate one of the old
mechanical train schedule boards. You can see it at about the 17 second mark. I used 3d track motion and changed each image at the 180 degree point of the rotation. Is this in any way similar to what you are trying to do?

Yes, that is similar to what I am trying to do. Are each of your squares a separate track, with each square a whole screen (just shrunk down with Track motion)?

My problem is that because of my masking and cropping, each track has only a small visible portion showing. So, in my example, I have Track 1 that is cropped and positioned to take up the left third of the screen, track 2 takes up the center third, and track 3 takes up the right third.

What I really want is to be able to move the point of rotation on each track so it is centered on that visible portion, not on the center of the screen.

I figured out how to do it using 3D Track Motion. There's an option to disable - "Edit in object space", and then I can use the X offset under "Rotation" to move the plane of rotation over to where I need it. Then, when I rotate about the Y axis, it rotates around the center of my video slice, rather than the center of the whole frame.

You could of also used the 3D blinds transition with a single blind to get a similar effect, perhaps with one layer vs two. You'd use track motion to shrink the track down to the appropriate size.

At first I tried the 3D blind transition, but it didn't work right because my clips weren't centered, so they rotated funny.

Then, I figured out it could be done if I did things in this order (say I am trying to flip clip A into clip B, and both of them are supposed to be on the left third of the screen):

1. Use Event Pan/Crop Mask tool to select the exact cropping I want on each clip (a third of the frame)

2. Use Event Pan/Crop Position (with Size About Center off) to slide each clip to be centered on the screen, making sure they are exactly the same size, and exactly center.

3. Overlap clip A and clip B on the same track, apply 3D Blinds Spin.

4. Use Track Motion to slide the whole thing to the left (or right), so, instead of centered, the clip shows up in the third of the screen I want.

Thanks for the suggestion.

FYI - there are no clips on the timeline. Only events.

I would do it be having each "card" on it's own track, get my transition correct, then use track motion to move that track to the proper place.

Normally it's my goal to not have to crop something if I can help it. It's rather have the events on the TL be cropped how I want. There's exceptions, but unless it's a real PITA, I have things cropped before I start doing fancy effects on them.
