2 questions relating to SoundForge Audio Studio 10

# I am converting a lot of VHS tapes to DVD with Movie Studio .... seen a number of posts that state best way to reduce noise is to create a noise profile on a quiet section and then apply that to track .. (Audacity was example) can SoundForge do this ?

# I have specific portions of tracks which will have a single click, i.e shows as almost vertical spike in audio, which is best way to reduce the level of that specific click (I can highlight it OK)

Sony's noise solution is called "Noise Reduction 2". It's a plugin that now comes included with many of the Pro versions, but i'm not sure if the Studio version has it. If it does, it should be Tools or FX Favorites.

There are lots of things you can do for the single clicks after highlighting them. If you do have the Noise Reduction plugin it also has a function intended for dealing with vinyl recordings called 'click and crackle reduction'. This works very well.

I often use Process / Fade / Graphic. Leave the beginning & ending points the same and add a node in the middle and drop it down. Depending on how short your selection is, you'll create a micro fade-out and micro fade-in that should leave the click almost silent, but be short enough that it won't really be noticed.

If the click happens during an otherwise quiet section, you can copy some other quiet background noise and paste it over the click.

If the click is really short, you can use the pencil tool to erase it, but this may leave an audible glitch depending on how well you can draw in what should replace it.

Clicks are usually manifested as rather high frequency phenomenon because of their steep slopes. An EQ filter can drop out the high frequencies without affecting the rest of the sound.

If you're not worried about preserving the original timing you could simply press the Del key after you've highlighted the click. If you've highlighted both audio and video then that section will be removed. With Auto-ripple enabled the rest of the video after the click will automatically move back to fill in the gap.

"If you're not worried about preserving the original timing you could simply press the Del key after you've highlighted the click."

Need to make those I/O points precisely at zero crossings, otherwise you'll be replacing a click with a click. Better just to replace the offending glitch by copying and pasting an adjacent waveform. With the right alignment and trim, it will work.
;?)

That said, the built in Vinyl Restoration tool works pretty well for this purposes. I find it's best with a couple of light passes, rather than one heavy pass.

First off - Noise Reduction ....its doesn't have that, but it does have 'audio restoration'
but that seems aimed at vinyl record restoration.
Are there any free 3rd party plugin or presets ...

On the click removal ... thanks for suggestions ... I need to keep sync, so will follow steps advised.

Go ahead with the vinyl restoration tools. The rumble & hiss reduction part can probably handle a lot of the VHS tape hiss too. It'll sample the noise you have and base it's removal on that.

Basically what you have is a watered down version of their full Noise Reduction plugin.

I did a search and found this page:
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/updates/noisereduction

It gives download for "Noisereduction2" it doesn't mention any license or cost ?
I have downloaded it ...
It created it's own folder in my Sony folder ...
But the Fx does not appear in Effect or Tools ? only the one mentioned previously "Express Audio Fx Audio restoration"

Do you know if I have to do something to allow me to use this newly downloaded "Noisereduction2"

I'm not sure that the full "Pro" plugins can be used in the Studio versions. Even if it did work, you'd have to purchase a license and activate it to get it out of demo mode.

I used the in-built Audio Restoration plugin, pity I can't get to make a noise profile ... but it did make some improvements.
