Has anybody had the same problem that I'm having wherein neither SF Pro 10 or 11 won't run on Windows 8.1? I can't get either to even run in Compatibility Mode set to Windows 8 or Windows 7 even.

Well it looks like the problem is on your end. I just fired up the machine opened up son Forge Pro 11 in Windows 8 .1. Open a file and chose one of the effects from the mastering tool shed.
Works just as it did on the old computer. Good luck sir.

Try selection "Run as administrator".

Why is it necessary to run as an administrator? On Windows 7 with SF10 that is not required.

I am looking for a solution to understand the problem. It should not be required to run at admin level.

We have had others report similar problems, and I am trying to determine if OP has the same issue.

I get all sorts of Admin sh*t on W7 with Vegas - sometimes even just saving stuff. And my account is an 'administrator' account.

Googling it seems to show is a common 'feature' on recent Windows, and a PITA, and nothing to do with SF or Vegas themselves ...

I'm using Vegas 12.0 and I've never had any problem with admin stuff. I use a regular account. My Admin account is only for admin duties.

Just noticed this morning on my Win7 laptop, while trying to fetch something out of the Documents and Settings directory, which i usually avoid like the plague but some programs inside on using it anyway, that Windows explorer won't open for me. "Access Denied". Ummmm, excuse me, it's MY folder on MY laptop, and i'm the administrator user.

All this admin stuff is certainly way over the top.

I think that's because Documents and Settings isn't really there and is shown only for backward compatibility purposes. You need to look in the Users folder.

I got an update to Windows 8.1 today and noticed if you right click the icon there is an option to check "Troubleshoot Compatibility." I ran that on Sound Forge Pro 11 and it tells me SF Pro 11 is incompatible!

I found the same issue on my Windows 8.1 Pro system when running SF Pro 11. I even went back and reinstalled my old SF Pro 10 with the latest update and even running it in compatibility mode for Windows 7 or Vista won't allow it to run successfully.

With SF Pro 10 I don't get the error message warning that SF Pro 11 gave me but SF Pro 10 on my Win 8.1 system won't open up fully to allow me to work within it. SF Pro 10 will allow me to see the program open up but the busy circle just keeps spinning and the program is essentially locked up.

I'm going to try completely uninstalling both SF Pro 10 and 11 and try again. I'm going to try reinstalling from within Windows 8.1's hidden administrator account.

I have version 10.0 and it runs on Windows 8.1

The only issue I have is an intermittent thing when I open an mp3 file.
Sometimes, despite the waveform looking fine, when you play the last few seconds of the audio have been muted.
If you manipulate the waveform with any process/effects the missing part of the audio also vanishes in the waveform.

It doesn't seem to matter whether you open the file from the File menu, or by right-click Open-With, or dragging the file onto SoundForge.

The only workaround is to create a new empty waveform and then drag the file in.
You then of course lose the filename and other info that were in the original mp3.

The mp3s are from Amazon.co.uk (perhaps their files are partially corrupted.)

I'm having the same problem with SF 11 Build 272 and Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit.

There is a printed solution that doesn't work that requires mucking about in the registry, and another that doesn't work saying to run as an administrator, and still another that doesn't work where they tell you to change the permissions under properties. None have worked.

I finally had to get some work done, so I used Audacity, which I find kind of ironic.

I did learn something that made me rethink the cost of Sound Forge. This was my important discovery, though it only applies to customers in North America. Did you all know that if we lived in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Russian Federation, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom, we'd get free phone support? Audacity is looking better and better. If we're not going to get immediate help when we need it, we might as well be getting no help from a free program.

I'm having the exact same problem again since the latest couple of rounds of Windows 8.1 security updates. I've uninstalled and reinstalled SF pro 11 (latest version from the website 11.0.272) from within both my default Administrator account AND THE HIDDEN ADMINISTRATOR accounts and nothing has worked to get SF 11 to run on Windows 8.1. Windows just says it's an "Incompatible Program".

Has Sony abandoned development of this program?

Where's Sony Creative? Are you going to fix this is in a timely manner (like now)?

I'm a very, very long time Sony Creative user. Please fix now!

This might be goofy but maybe it has to do with SF being stuck in 32 bit land and is not 64 bit. As in the way SF is stuck in 32 bit land.

Maybe the compiler or whatever it is called that SCS uses is not creating code that is fully Windows 8.1 compatible.

I remember they said they are using a new one for Vegas.

Why is SF still not 64 bit compatible? 64 bit has been around far too long for this nonsense!

One reason may be that the majority of VST plugs are 32 bit. Many now have 64 bit versions, but I lost plenty of 32 bit VSTs when my DAW went 64 bit. For sound there is not much benefit for running the application in 64 bit (other than OS compatibility). The reason Video needs 64 bit is there is that they handle huge file sizes. It is rare you have a sound file > 2Gb limit for 32 bit applications. Now using VSTs that have sample libraries that are very large is a good reason to transfer......

I just wanted to join the club. I have to select "run as Administrator" to get Sound Forge Pro 11 to run on Windows Pro 8.1 x64.

Interestingly, launching normally using the icon (non administrator), I get a dialog box saying Registration of Sound Forge Pro 11.0 requires elevated privileges. The [Next >] button has an Admin shield on it, which brings up the admin approval screen when clicked, but it doesn't launch Sound Forge afterwards.

The only way Sound Forge will launch is to right click on the program icon and select "Run as Administrator".

I also noticed that I can't seem to drag and drop files onto Sound Forge Pro to open them. I have to go through the standard File>Open dialog. I don't remember that being an issue before.

I have the exact same problem as you. I set the open as administrator property in the shortcuts.

However since the last windows update, if I go near Sound Forge I get file system errors everywhere, total system failure, and the computer can only be shut down by cutting the power.

For me the program has died.

i'm on win 8, sf11 272. i get this window: (i'll paraphrase)

registration of sf11... requires elevated privileges. if your user account... you will be prompted for admin creds...

after this step, sf11 will be registered for all users.

click next, nothing happens.

and, i can no longer open a clip in sound forge from vegas.

any devs hang out here (like chris dolan on the vegas forum)?

I got around the problem of not being able to edit from Vegas by going into the advanced properties of the Sound Forge exec and checking the "always run as administrator box. This works for me now, but it is still a problem with running Sound Forge on Windows 8.

The Yahoo answers reply above is the probably the best solution.

I was just having this conversation with someone today. The problem is most likely that SF is trying to write to a directory it does not have access to.

The problem is that Windows is now VERY locked down and a program doesn't even have the rights to write to it's own files any more unless they are in the right directory.

I'm not having this problem right now (on Win 7) so I cant test it but I would bet that the answer is simple: Disable UAC. Google will tell you how.

Run as Administrator may help to some extent but it probably isn't enough for all the problems that might show up. Turn off UAC and it will probably fix everything. But keep an eye out for spyware! It's amazing how easily that stuff get's in. Keep Malwarebytes handy and run a full scan every few weeks!

I had the same problem occur 2 days ago with SF11 on Windows 8.1. SF11 had been operating okay for just less than 4 weeks on my new Windows 8.1 computer when the opening problem suddenly struck for no apparent reason. It was just as described by so many other SF users who have posted on this forum about SF.

"Run as Administrator" was the only way to get it going, but there was no access to SF11 through Vegas Pro 12 or VP13. Turning off AUC and anti-virus made no difference, and nor did a system wind-back using System Restore. However, I was able to register SF11 again using a new activation code that was quickly provided by SCS support. Unfortunately, that alone did not solve the problem however.

When the opening problem first appeared, I checked whether or not the same problem occurred to SF11 on the other 2 User Accounts on my computer - SF11 opened properly on those 2 accounts, but those also fell in a heap after I had uninstalled and then re-installed SF11 to see if that would solve the problem.

However, after re-installing SF11 today with the new activation code, SF11 worked fine on the other 2 User Accounts even though its opening problem remained on my primary account. After turning that primary account offline and creating a new primary account, and then re-installing some programs that didn't ripple over, SF11 now opens properly both as a stand-alone and through VP.

Whether this is a long-term solution or there is an intermittent problem between any of SF11, VP and Windows 8.1 only time will tell. But for the moment - at least in my case - the SF11 opening problem seems to have manifested itself mainly on the one User Account but not on other User Accounts even though they're on the same computer.

I hope that tis may be of assistance to others on the forum.

Cheers

FWIW, I bought the cheapo SF (Audio Studio 10) for our new (W 8.1) studio computer, because it is used only for recording - everything else is done on Pro 11 in the office, still on W 7.

It works fine - I'm posting this, not as a nee-ner, but to see if helps with troubleshooting. Maybe there's something in SF11 that isn't in Audio Studio - apart from the obvious enhanced features, that is..

As you will see from my post on 12 June, it seemed like I had a resolution to the Sound Forge / Windows 8.1 problem following assistance from SCS's support team.

Unfortunately, SF11 suddenly collapsed back into the very same problem today and was quickly followed by SF10 - neither program will open other than running it as administrator - and neither program will therefore open through Vegas Pro 12 or 13.

Both programs reverted to the problem state about 30 days after installing and registering them.

Please, please, please SCS fix this problem - it's been around over a year now.

I really hope that the fix will be as an update to SF10 and SF11, and not as having to buy an upgrade to SF12.

The Administrator rights bug is still not fixed in build 293 :(

I have upgraded to SF11 b293 now on two different PCs. On one of them I could finally run SF w/o administrator rights (unless its falls back after I've rebooted).

But on the other (a Surface Pro 2) it still pops up the registration and asks for Admin rights and simply goes away when I click Yes to allow it.

It's the ApplicationRegistration.exe that needs Admin rights and it tries to load this file:

c:\Users\XXXXX\AppData\Local\Sony\Sound Forge Pro\11.0\SonyInterchange.txt

...but the txt file doesn't exist (I guess that's why it simply quits).

I hope Sony can fix this.

I had SF 10 Pro installed under Windows 8.1 Pro64. It was working perfectly, I didn't have to enable the "Run as administrator" option, no UAC prompts, or anything.

Then the other day my USB HP Digital Headset that I had been using developed a short in the cord and stop working. So, I went out and bought a USB Logitech Headset to replace the HP. The drivers installed correctly. They worked fine with other audio programs, accept ... yep, you guessed it.

I ran Forge and I got the User Registration screen which says it needed elivated privileges to run, followed by the prompt to allow the program to make changes for all users and then blamo! nothing!

So, now I can only run the program using the option to "Run As Administrator" and that's about it. Once I get the program running this way I change the driver to use the correct new Logitech headset and my main internal Soundcard.

Would this issue of Forge not running correctly on 8.1 be related to new drivers or hardware/Software changes being made to the system after the initial Forge instalation?

I can run Sound Forge 10 on Windows 8.1. It just asks me if I want to allow the program to make changes to my computer. If I try to run it as an audio editor from Vegas I get the same window and I can get it to load. If I try to run it as audio editor in Acid Pro it won't let it start, same with CD Architect. I can get around the problem, but wish it would open properly from Acid.

Using an administrator account is not the same as Run as Administrator. The latter has higher user privileges than the former.

For a permanent fix just right click the SF11 installer file or update file and select run as administrator. From now you should no longer have problems with constantly being asked to register or similar issues.

YESSSS !

After a long time, Sony gaves me a solution for the windows 8 activation problem. After 10 weeks of normal using, I need to te revalidate activation at each start. But this time it's fixed.

1. Uninstall sound Forge
2. In regedit delete this key :
HKEY_USERS > [SID d'utilisateur]_Classes > VirtualStore > MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Wow6432Node > Sony Creative Software > Sound Forge Pro > 11
I needed to change the autorizations on this key (right click, aytorisation, I check "autorise" for everybody, the delete the key. If 11 is the Only Key under Sound Forge Pro, you can delete the "sound forge pro" key also.
3. Re-install sound forge, validate.

It work for me.

It's not the first time I remove someting in the registry, but this time it's seems to be the good method. Thank you Sony !

Thanks Jihem. That worked for me.

I didn't have to change any authorisation on the keys in the registry. I simply deleted the whole 11.0 key.

When I reinstalled Sound Forge I had to run it as administrator the first time in order to get it registered with SCS, but after that I can open it (for now) as a normal user.
