OT: Anyone use laptop cooling pad with Vegas?

I have an ASUS i7-3610QM laptop with 16GB of RAM and a 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 650M running Vegas 12.

I predominately edit Canon XF 105/305 MXF files (50MBps data rate) along with some GoPro footage using Vegas Multi-cam. Everything is 1920x1080 24p.

I notice that when multi-cam editing with three cameras (two MXF and 1 GoPro MP4) with the GeForce aiding in the previews, that my usual preview rate of around 15 fps will sometimes drop to 2-3 fps, and I hear the laptop fan running faster. If I wait a bit, then the preview rate seems to pick back up.

I suspect that the CPU is throttling back due to heat issues. Does anyone have any experience with using a laptop cooling pad to help alleviate that?

My first question would be what sort of surface is the laptop sitting on. My wife used to get an overheated laptop because it sat on a table with a table cloth under it. I fixed that simply by placing a glass sheet under the laptop.

Having said that, laptops should be able to cool themselves properly providing you can get good airflow under them. First thing is to check the grille of the fan to see if it is clogged with dust. If so, blowing it out with high pressure air should clean it.

Next make sure the laptop is sitting on a hard surface, and it will also help if you simply raise it a fraction above the table surface.

CoolerMaster models are well designed, last for years, and work. Well worth it IMO.

I'm using it too.

Even, a friend, using MacbookPro, during expo, placed on top of glass table without any cooling pad, leaving it to play his demo looping (yeah, a little bit nuts - but, I don't know, his idea probably)...

And, in the end of that day? the glass table cracks...

Vegas is a high-processing application, so it is suggested to use it.
