Subject:"Sustaining Loop" metadata - what is it exactly?

Hi all,

I've been trying to simplify my workflow when moving files between Sound Forge and other audio editing applications.

Central to my work with creating virtual instruments is setting what Sound Forge calls "Sustaining Loop" data. Although other kinds of marker and range metadata are sometimes detected in software samplers, only the "sustaining loop" metadata is detected reliably and consistently.

But what is it? Is it a proprietary Sony format, or an open, documented one? Is it essentially the same as the marker/range data that other applications can write, but just has a different name?

Any insight would be appreciated.

It represents the standard SMPL chunk in a RIFF (wav) file. If you save as .wav with metadata, then SMPL-aware applications/hardware will see it.

I'd certainly classify it as a legacy feature these days, but your mileage may vary.

Ok, thanks for the info.

By the way, why would you describe it as a legacy feature?
