Unable to import an MPEG2 file - Vegas asks for

Hi all :-)

For some reason, which I can't figure out, I can't import any MPEG2 into Vegas any more. I have been playing around with a lot of freeware capture software and removed most of them again - and I'm now stuck with a Vegas which won't use any MPEG2 files.

I have tried reinstalling Vegas 12 to the latest version - didn't work. Tried reinstalling my PowerDVD12 (usually registers a MPEG2 codec) - didn't work.

I can play back the MPEG2 (MPG/MPA/MPV) files, without any issues, in Windows Media Player 12.

Here's a screenshot of the error: http://www.mitip.dk/vegas.png

PS: I don't even have Quicktime installed and I didn't have it installed in the past eithe. So why does Vegas want Quicktime?

TWO (2) things are wrong in your situation.

1) Playing around with freeware of Mpeg2 codecs on a PC designed for serious NLE work

2) Not installing Quicktime first before a complete install of VegasPro on your PC as the dialogue and SCS state in their install literature.

Ok, first (1) these issues are not likely to be related. Quicktime is an underlying component of full VegasPro but at default does not have any Mpeg2 component connection.

(2) When you "PLAY" with free or open-source code for Mpeg2 codecs you run serious risk of 'harming" what VegasPro can actually manage with Mpeg2 and plug-ins designed for VegasPro. This is particularly true of any underlying 'ffmpeg" open source code that is likely to sneak into your system. At that point your system is no longer pure and will have strange anomalies with VegasPro. Running MediaPlayer is not a very serious test as it is pretty dumb about Mpeg2 codecs.

3) You should install an earlier version of Quicktime rather than more recent. You can get by without installing but not for very long.

In the distant past Vegas installed the MPEG-2 codec with DVD Architect. If you have DVD Architect, consider reinstalling that application.

Edit: or was that the Dolby Digital Pro AC3 encoder?

are you sure your files are mpeg2? (video compression itself)

where they come from?

You may want to try this to tell Vegas to Ignore the 3rd party CODECs installed on your PC.

1. While holding down the SHIFT Key, open the Preferences dialog under Options / Preferences.
2. Click on the Internal Tab.
3. Enter CODEC into the text box at the bottom of the dialog.
4. In the Value column of the Ignore third party DV codecs field, enter TRUE.
5. Press OK to accept the change.
6. After making this change you should close and restart Vegas.

This tells Vegas to only use the Vegas CODECs for importing & rendering.

@Gary James

i believe this option only affect the internal/external DV codec (DV/DVCPRO25)

I've used this in the past to restore functionality to Vegas after installing a 3rd party codec that prevented Vegas from importing video into the timeline.
