...shrunken heads...

Upon opening Vegas Pro 9.0e (Build 1146) 64-bit, I notice the external monitor view is about 20% of its full size...
I hunt for a way to increase the size... no luck.
I look at the size of the original imagery - GoPro 1920X1080; same is indicated in the
Vegas Pro media bin...
I think perhaps it's just a fluke and that perhaps it will render correctly... wrong.

take a peek here for the result:

I'll stand by here for any feedback. . . you may also comment on the video...

Thanks everyone. . .

Two things:
1. Vegas Pro 9 has incomplete support for avchd and similar MOV/MP4 formats. Apparently you have found one of those limits.
2. Vegas Pro 9 usually needs Quicktime 7.6.2 or earlier to work correctly with the MOV format.

Have you ensured that your Video Project Properties match your source video?

Vegas includes a tool for doing this automatically.

And what Render As template are you using to output your finished video?

I've used GoPro video before without a hitch. . .

perhaps my previous experience was the fluke and it's showing its true self now...

(sigh)

Thanks...

I thought I had... I rechecked and didn't see anything for GoPro (age of Vegas 9, I imagine), but am at the proper size (1920X1080)...
* * *
I've tried several render as settings - none of them affect the size of the final product...

it was set at 720X480 - no success.
I changed it to 1980X1080 - no success.
I tried Internet 16:9 - no success there either.

I tried to pull in some stills... the stills appear in this shrunken mode as well.

I must have some setting jacked up. . . (sigh)...

I think I have a copy of Movie Studio running around here someplace...
I'll look for it as a back up editor for now and save some cash for the upgrade...

Thanks guys...

I pulled up a version of Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition 8.0.

My first attempt showed full width and black borders across the top and bottom...
I open the properties to find 720X480. . .

I changed the size to 1440X1080 (the largest available), and the preview window immediately changed to eliminate the black borders. . .

I guess the further I go back to pull up older versions of Vegas, the better off I am at eliminating frustrations and obstacles. . . LOL

what a wonderful day I'm having. . . (wink) courtesy of Vegas. . .

aloha y'all. . .

I spoke too soon. . .
I can't upload all the video I have to the media bin in Studio 8.0. . .(sigh)

it's always something. . .

if it's not artifacts in the video, then it's stuttering in the rendering. . . (wink)

it's always something. . .

Remember Roseanne Rosanna Danna from SAT Night Live. . .?

Well, Vegas Pro 9 is 4 years old. That's a lifetime in terms of digital video. The Hero video was barely a gleam in Go Pro's eye then. It could be that version 8 just don't digest it.

Version 12 is much much more advanced. And it includes a tool for precisely matching your project properties to your video. I dont' know if version 9 has this tool or not. But the symptoms you're describing are nearly always the result of a mismatch between video and project settings.

Hey Steve. . .

well, I did have 10e working at one point. . .
glitches and crashes urged me to go back to 9e...
* * *
I was in the test group for 12 beta. . . (sigh)
not very encouraging during the beta phase. . .

some of the chatter I see here on the forum indicates problems with 12 still exist. . .
then again, no version since I've been a user (4.0) has ever been
trouble-free or without its share of trouble after release. . .
* * *
I also don't create very resource-intense video. . .
but I love the confidence that comes with having a powerful
engine under the hood, so to speak. . .
* * *
I've arranged with the banker (wife) to spring for 12.0 on payday... (wink)

Thanks for the encouragement, brother. . .

Earl J, there always a problem in all build..., but it depends on whether your situation will always depends on it or can be avoided... I had few, but I got a little workaround to prevent it.
Very problematic in early builds, but since #563, it is a huge improvement in stability.

Maybe you can share what biggest trouble of 12 (that you know) hold you from upgrade?

If you can upload a snippet of the problem video to dropbox or another upload site, I'll work with it. I have 9.0e (1146) on a machine just for this type of eventuality.

Although your problem looks to me like Quicktime issues I have seen before, you should realize that GoPro has bought Cineform and has a free version now that allows multi-resolution Cineform rendering that will be essentially lossless and allows you to edit easier and wrap your file in whatever way works best for the NLE at hand......

The free version does not allow you to convert to some of the very high resolution formats, but I am sure you can work with 1920X1080 seamlessly....and this might solve your problems. GoPro talks about this quite a bit on their website.
