May help somebody: Disable Track Buffering?

Grazie wrote on 9/6/2013, 3:35 PM
I was going through some old stuff today and came across a tip to improve stability and that was to disable Track Buffering. I disabled the TB, used Vegas all today and I'm getting no issues.

Here's what the Helps file says:

"Enable track buffering

Select this check box and drag the Track buffering slider if you want to adjust the amount of audio that is prerendered ahead of the cursor position.

When the check box is selected, a separate processing thread is used to render audio from tracks. On multiprocessor or multicore computers, a thread will be created for each logical processor, resulting in improved track counts, improved performance with lower latency, and faster audio rendering.

When the check box is cleared, a single processing thread is used to render audio from tracks and busses."

So, can anybody say why this would or why this would not assist stability?

TIA

Grazie

I can't speak to this specific case. However, with 30 years in scientific programming experience I have coded many defective buffers. Depending on what data or code lives next door in memory to the buffer and gets stepped on by the defect, the unexpected side effects can be marvelous to behold and breathtakingly difficult to find and repair.

Until one of the truly intelligent ones show up, I'll offer a guess based on my version of common sense and NO actual knowledge of what I'm talking about.

Most of the issues I've run across with VP11 and 12 all feel like memory related issues - memory not releasing when the program expects it to be, or instructions not being handled in the proper sequence. I don't know enough to say it's programming related, but I suspect it is. Seems that anything you could do to reduce the number of simultaneous instructions the app is attempting to carry out, the smoother the ride may be. Each thread reduced is one less instruction set vying for attention during a cycle.

Hope you had a great birthday.

Larry

Whoops, too late. One of the smart ones beat me.

Amen to that.

Thanks Chaps!

Sure, this is a fairly fragrant or sophisticated issue I'm airing . . . I suppose I'm wanting to get some YES that would make a difference, and therefore, I wouldn't be too far off the mark by doing this.

Now, and as both of you are inferring, if this DOES have an effect then it would be down to some form of programming that would need to be re-invented to cure it. I ain't going there!

Well, I'll carry on in my own way seeing if this does head towards stability. I'm thrashing Magic Bullet Looks, to within an inch of its Life , inside Vegas and things couldn't be better. So who knows - eh?

Lasser! Thanks for the B-Day wishes.

Oh, here's what I'm doing within MBL:

Help me Grazie, how are you consuming beetles within MBL ?

You got me completely stumped on this one. After reading what you said, I cranked up my other system and started Vegas and I cannot find anything about "Enable track buffering".

I clicked on the help and searched for it and there was nothing about this. I looked in all of the options and nothing there either.

Where on earth did you find this?

Maybe not in the latest build of Vegas 12?

Options - Preferences - Audio Device - and: voila.

It was by VegasExtended - 2nd from last post.

It was back in March 2011, but I had had this in my Pending Tray and thought it would be of use. I've removed the Track Buffering as an Option and Vegas is performing nicely.

If this DOES prove to be an issue then surely it should come with some warning and a pointer to how this is affecting the efficiency of Vegas running. If this is so relevant, and easy to switch on/off, more should be made of it. SCS? You reading this?

I wanted to get the source back at yah VidMus, and to make the point that this was with Vegas Pro 10. VidMus you ALSO took part in that thread too!

Here's what I've been doing in my front yard without MBL.

Excellent John! I like what you've done with the front room.

My results aren't nearly as good. Must be the plug ins.

somewhere in some sony doc it says to disable track buffering if you're having trouble with Waves plugins.
