Credits to Doug De Young for sharing this awesome workflow. I was an beta tester for BMCC and V12 and the xml never quite worked properly (or i didn't know what to expect). Ended up using PPro with V12 to get stuff around Resolve.

This allows you to use the awesome grading capability of Resolve and keep the image quality. Doug also shows Resolve steps very clearly. You only have to google for some tutorials to learn the actual grading process (its not hard).

And now, I can leave PPro behind.
I hope Vegas 13's xml would finally work with Resolve 10!!

engr,

I'm not quite sure what problem you were having.

Build 563 seemed to address some issues with using BMCC files and the standard XML Resolve-Vegas Pro workflow. The primary issue fixed in this build was a problem with Quicktime timecodes (see this thread).

The only problem that I now find is that Vegas Pro 12 chokes on having a large number of Quicktime files - which, by the way, possibly would plague the workflow depicted in the video.

Hi Jason, just tried the new workflow with both xml and aaf but it still fails to work due to the timecode mismatch issue for 5D3 files. Seems that Vegas resets the timecode. No workaround at the moment except to go via Ppro again.

engr,

Yes, the timecode works for some files (e.g., BMCC files and Resolve-rendered Quicktime files), but not for 5D3.

Interestingly, Adobe and DaVinci Resolve don't seem to have the difficulty working with Quicktime that Vegas Pro does.

Hi folks, I had a good chat with Davinci Resolve PM 2 days back and he explained that the 5D3 doesnt have a timecode so to speak. Adobe cleverly adds some frame count / timecode reference for Canon DSLR files in the xml so Resolve knows where the clips start and end.

The good news is the Vegas helpdesk has responded that they are working on it already (hopefully within V12 !). While i wish they had done it in the first place since DSLR users are definitely not a small group in Vegas.

As someone who is not as familiar with the more expensive stand alone products, how is Resolve better than Sony Vegas or Premiere Pro?

Thanks for posting the link. I found it most helpful.

PixelStuff - Resolve isn't "better" than Sony Vegas or Premiere Pro in that it doesn't (yet) do all the things that they do. It is not an NLE. It has more/better color correction capabilities, which is its traditional use. As such, I would count it as better than either Vegas or Premiere at color grading. I mean this in good humor, but your question is like asking how a Pirelli tire is better than a Ford Mustang.

Also, Resolve Lite is not expensive (in dollars). It is free. It might be expensive (in hours) in learning curve, but even that isn't too bad - after all, I've been able to learn it.

Having a problem setting up Da Vinci Resolve to show the preview window on my second monitor (which is a calibrated HP Dreamcolor display). I've worked through the Project Manager settings. Obviously in Vegas Pro I use the secondary monitor and guess there is a similar set up procedure needed for DaVinci, but I can't find it. I thought p292 of the manual told me but on re-reading I realise that doesn't define displaying the viewer on an external monitor. Assistance will be very welcome!

Unless someone smarter than me has found a way around this, I think it's a limitation of the free version. No external monitoring of just the preview window. Perhaps if you have a BM card installed that option appears, or it does it automatically. I have AJA SDI cards. The few times I have tried to use it, I drug the entire workspace to, and resized the preview window on my secondary monitor.

This is the main reason I don't use Resolve much. If anyone else has found a better way to use it, I too would love to hear.

Thanks for reply. I can't drag the workspace -- it slightly overfills my system monitor (heaven knows why!) so if there are the usual buttons, I can't access them.

Well, I've found the unsatisfactory answer: "You'll need a playback card or device like a DeckLink, Intensity Pro, UltraStudio, etc. to monitor your timeline in full screen on a grade monitor. Resolve does not output to multiple GUI displays."

The justification is: "A normal PC display connected to a GPU is only running 8bit and does not do an accurate job of displaying the colour of video. It was designed to display the computer GUI."

Despite: "I think now that most computers are shipping with Display Port and can drive 10bit GUI displays that can be properly colour corrected it would be good for Resolve to support multiple GUI displays. Maybe in version 10??"

I am using Vegas 11. I would like to upgrade to Vegas 13 Edit

I also would like to learn Davinci Resolve, but based on this post at the beginning it was not direct from one software to another.

What are the updates about this?

Thanks anticipated
