Lots of recording probs and no time for tech support!

Hey, well Im kinda running out of time here to get a project done and Im running into alot of problems. First of all, I will say that the computer i am working on is top of the line, brand new, and is fully capable of running vegas audio as well as playing back and recording at the same time. So, my problems are:

1. When I try to record a second track, it just records over the first one

2. I cant hear the first track as im recording the second track.

Those I hope are easy questions to answer and ANY help would be very appreciated, thanks so much to anyone who replies!

This is how I do it:
Set up a new track to record into. If you don't want to hear the segment in the old track that you want to replace, click EDIT then SPLIT and drag the edges of the track out of the way. If you want to hear the old track, do nothing and it will play back while you record into the new track. If you don't want to hear ANY of the old track, simply mute that track.
