VP12 Capture not working

Randy Brown wrote on 6/9/2013, 2:45 PM
I use a little Canon HV40 whenever I need to capture DV tape but I haven't had to do this since I uninstalled/reinstalled Win 7 (64) and having issues.
The HV40 does show up and is selected as device in prefs and the play/stop buttons seem to control it (although VERY sluggish) but it doesn't capture ...actually it does but it's less than a second).
So I went to prefs/video and selected use external application (C:\prog files\sony VP12\vidcap60.exe)...now vidcap says it can't open the hv40...I open vidcap and with the cam off it displays no device detected as expected and then turn the hv40 on and it shows the logo and that it's connecting ( specifically to the hv40) and then I get device canon hv40 could not be opened...please make sure that it is turned on and not being used by another app.
If I turn the hv40 off vid cap displays please connect a device...then if I turn it back on it goes through the same procedures as above.
So vidcap obviously sees it but can someone tell me what's going on please?
Thanks very much,
Randy

For firewire connect - in Win7 - always make sure you try legacy drivers for the native Windows OS defined Firewire implementation. Search this in this forum.

Thanks very much...it's been a long time since I've frequented this forum but it was always advised to use TI drivers for firewire...searching the word legacy I found the following is it the discussion you were talking about? Also, google doesn't seem to turn up a download site for the legacy driver...any advice on where to find them?
Thanks again,
Randy

Randy, there's nothing to download. Read the reply from diverG in the Sony Tapes from XHA! thread on how to do it.

Thanks very much guys but I guess that's not my problem because it does the same thing...any more suggestions?
Thanks again,
Randy

Randy, that camera is an HD model. If the HD capture utility in Vegas doesn't work for you, try HDVSplit (it's free).

I also prefer HDV Split, the scene changes are far cleaner, and the setup of where to capture to is much more straightforward. I don't hear audio - something to do with ffdshow not being installed - but it is captured.

In your original post you said you're trying to capture "DV tape".

If you're trying to capture DV and not HDV tape then you have to use Vidcap60.exe NOT HDVSplit etc.

Your most likely problem is your camera's firewire interface is set to HDV or Auto.
Try changing it to DV.

Vidcap60.exe hasn't changed in years, works just fine on my Win 7 / 64 system, no need to worry about legacy drivers etc. Getting the firewire interface on my VCR setup to match what's on the tape is the difference between it working and the symptoms you've described..

Much thanks to everyone HDV split worked fine.
Bob, I should have said HDV shot on mini-DV tape.
Thanks again so much everyone!

Randy, I'm glad to hear that HDV split worked for you.
