More DNxHD questions

Weldon wrote on 6/11/2013, 9:18 AM
I used John Rofrano's instructions to load and build my DNxHD template in VP12 but I am getting a "vegas has stopped working" pop up with every attempt to render. Is there a preferred QT and Avid LE version I should look for? I am having such a tough time with this profile where it has worked so well for me in the past... I can render out to AVCHD or not HD QT fine. Any ideas are really appreciated!

You should be using Avid LE 2.3.8
JR's instructions are excellent.
Post a screenshot of your video render window, your DNxHD template, and it should be easy to point out the error.

Follow the directions in the Sticky at the top of the forum.

Try this format: [img=http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20447760/Jazzy4.jpg]

Note: the image name ends with a .jpg or .png or .gif (not .html). Dropbox is very easy. I'm not sure about photobucket, but you need the URL of the image itself, not the page that contains the image. Often that can be determined by right-clicking on the image and selecting "properties".

Also, here's a tutorial I made some time ago using SnagIt for screen capture, but you could the Windows Snipping Tool as well.

Thank you Jerry, but it just will not work for me. I can't get vegas to work and I can't get a simple screen shot to post. I tried dropbox, tinypic, photobucket. I saved the image as gifs, jpg...you name it. I am sure at this point Adobe has taken control of the PC and they are forcing me to switch to Premier because I have not been this mad at anything since my divorce...

One recent issue with Dropbox is when selecting "Copy Public Link", Dropbox copies an "https://" URL to your clipboard. You should change that to "http://" (no "s") as this forum will not accept Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure addresses for image posting.

Good Luck!

WoooHooo!
LOL
Finally...that was it, Jerry, removing the "s". Now, if someone can tell me why I can't render out a DNxHD, my day will be greatly better.

Weldon,

Glad that worked. fwiw: the only difference I can see between your settings and mine is that I have the Quality Slider set in the middle. Edit: Whoops, just checked and I also have some templates set at High/100% and they work as well.

That said, hopefully musicvid will return to this thread as he is the expert.

Nothing in a template should cause Vegas to crash.
There have been some bugs that will over different versions of Vegas e.g. Sony AVC at high bitrates in V9.

I'd be more inclined to be looking at which version of Quicktime is installed as some versions of that and Vegas have not played together nicely.

Because I was unable to solve this problem of my QT render options missing, I wiped my hard drive over the weekend. I have only re-loaded VP12 and I have the latest version of QT, 7.74. I tried using the version prior and it made no difference. I totally agree that it must be something to do with where I have it installed, Program files, or what version...?
farss wrote on 6/11/2013, 6:22 PM
Is there any particular reason why you need to use the Avid codec?
It's a fine codec that I've used a few times myself but there are other options.

Bob,
I use it as a intermediary for Handbrake and then YouTube and Vimeo. I have been using it for about 2 years now and I am very comfortable with the work flow. I am sure there are as good, if not better, ways to go. What is really bothering me is that it's not working and that means something is wrong with my set up and that drive me nuts. I have been having different issues with VP12 since early March. Before that, it worked great as did 11 and 10.
farss wrote on 6/11/2013, 7:22 PM
Fair enough but sorry to say I cannot help you much at all as I've only installed V12 on a sandbox PC, V9 remains my old faithful.

Your render template looks fine. The quality slider isn't applicable to DNxHD since it uses intraframe compression.

I've seen several posts about problems between latest Vegas and latest Quicktime. Sorry I'm unable to test those. Only thing I can think of is try QT 7.6.x as a fallback. Or use a different intermediate codec.
VidMus wrote on 6/11/2013, 9:37 PM
You could try what I do and use *.avi with Sony YUV codec. Big files, yes, but no more problems with QuickTime! No need to install another codec and have to follow special instructions on setting it up.

Also, a little faster on rendering.

Works great with Hand Brake!

I will not go back to DNxHD!

Hope this helps!
Weldon wrote on 6/11/2013, 10:35 PM
I thought I read someone saying avi doesn't work with the new Handbrake build. I guess I should check it out..
Thanks, everyone, for all of your help. It means a lot.
musicvid10 wrote on 6/11/2013, 11:06 PM
Handbrake will import many AVI flavors, including Sony YUV. It still has problems with Lagarith, as was confirmed again this week.

Sony YUV renders faster and is a little better quality than 8-bit DNxHD. It is my intermediate of choice when I work in 32 bit Vegas projects, and exporting a 10 bit intermediate results in less banding than an 8 bit intermediate, even though the destination (x264) is 8-bit..

The problem is, Sony YUV uses about 7GB per minute of video, and DNxHD uses 1GB per minute (I just tested this). 60 minutes of YUV would almost fill a 500GB hard drive, but the same drive would hold over 7 hours of DNxHD.

-- Speed, Quality, Size. Pick two.
VidMus wrote on 6/12/2013, 12:59 AM
I know you did not say that you actually use one but I would never use a 500GB hard drive on an editing system.

1.0TB for boot and backups and two 2.0TB drives for video.

The larger drives are a bit faster than the smaller ones are. Except for the SSD drives of course.

WD Caviar Blacks for all drives.

Note: My drives were made before the floods so I have no problems with them. The ones made after the floods are getting a lot of negative reviews on them.

musicvid10 wrote on 6/12/2013, 9:19 AM
You're correct, I wasn't advocating for 500GB drives in video editing, although lots of people use them.

I was giving a practical illustration of the huge amount of space Sony YUV eats up compared to DNxHD, an important consideration for the many editors here who are less endowed.
