Subject:Help Me Decide to Upgrade to 10

Hello--

I've got SF 6 and use it primarily as my wave editor (I've integrated it into my sequencer software). Sony is offereing a massive discount for me to upgrade to SF 10 Pro, but I just upgraded WaveLab and I'm not sure I really need to upgrade SF.

Other than plug-ins, what do I get in SF 10 that I don't with WL8?

Non-destructive editing ? VST plugins (waere they in4 ?) ? ASIO drivers? Wavehammer.

Was batch converter built into SF 4? At some point it was a standalone app, and then it got baked back in (version 8, I think?). That would be worth it to me.

Multichannel (more than 2).

But the primary reason would be speed. Starting with version 6, SoundForge runs about 5 to 20 times faster than versions 5 and earlier. The non-destructive editing is da bomb.

You can always download & install SoundForgePro10 and use it in demo mode for some time before deciding; all the features will work (except the included iZotope Mastering plugins) so you can evaluate every aspect.

I don't know what happened but I wasn't notified that anyone replied to my post. :-(

The non-destructive editing sounds good. I have Wave Hammer in SF 4, as well as batch processing and I have ASIO drivers in WaveLab 8.

I didn't see any plug-ins that I didn't get in WaveLab 8.

I am leaning toward the upgrade--I know SF 10 is better than SF 4, but I just don't know if I need to buy it when I just upgraded to Wavelab 8 that does audio editing and mastering as well.

Thanks for the replies.

Does anyone here have Wavelab? Are there things you can do in SF 10 that you can't or can't do as well in WL?

As I recall, way-back when dinosaurs roamed the earth... prior to ver-5, SF did not have real time preview, which was a huge PITA, rendering segments by trial and error.. It also did not support VST plug-ins.. at least w/o a VST wrapper. I liked the GUI graphics in 4 & 4.5. I haven't used Wavelab in years so I can't comment.
I would upgrade without a doubt. SF-Pro 10 also comes with the Noise Reduction 2.0, Acoustic Mirror and CD Architect suites.. though it's possible to burn DAO CDs directly w/o CD Arc.

ASIO capability in WaveLab doesn't somehow 'migrate' to SF !

As for if it's worth the upgrade - download the demo , suck it and see !

Took the plunge and installed it last night. I was confused when I first posted this that I had SF 4. I actually had SF 6 and before the upgrade, had WL 4. D'oh!

Anyway, I'm surprised with how similar the interface of 10 is to 6. I still have much to learn about the new features and will start looking through the manual today. Haven't seen where to put in the Izotope Mastering serial number yet--

I think the final determining factor was when I uninstalled the 10 demo, it messed up my SF 6 full install and I didn't want to take the time to fix it--$90 come on. That's less than two months of paying the gardener :-p

Thanks all

The GUI in all versions of SF are similar. Under the hood there are significant changes between 6 and 10. As I recall, SF6 natively did not support VST but did have real time preview, and did not include some of the suites (I forget which).. NR I think.

> Haven't seen where to put in the Izotope Mastering serial number yet--

First step is to install them = run izotope-mastering-effects-2.exe; which you obtained from SF10 download page.
Second step is enter serial first time you open the FX.
