OT: What FX to make 2d photos look 3d?

smhontz wrote on 5/6/2013, 7:40 PM
I've seen this effect in several documentaries - where they took a flat photo, and instead of just panning or zooming on it, they do something to make the photo seem 3D - where the subject moves relative to the background.

You can see it in this trailer for the movie "We Are Legion" at 1:10:

What kind of software are they using to accomplish this?

Also saw it used extensively in the great documentary "Sound City" by Dave Grohl.

First you need to separate the foreground from the background

Then place the foreground image on its own track select 3D option in track and move this track forward
Do the same for back track but move this track slightly back then place both tracks in a new 3d track and simply pan the parent track so that everything moves in order of space

You can go crazy and do a few layers ..nothing wrong with crazy it’s your parole officer you have to keep happy not your psychiatrist.

this is 3D layered and the only image that is moving within the 3D parent track is the airplane, I keyed the parent track to get the motion for all the elements

In Paintshop Pro X5. All you have to do is create two 2 layers of the same image.
-Use background remover on one of the images
-save each layer as a separate .png
-import each one into Vegas on a separate track.
-Use track motion to zoom in/out or pan the top track over the bottom.

I've added some nice effects like gaussian blur and/or defocus slowly moving the image which adds some sparkle effect to the background.

You can do that effect in Vegas by making a mask of the image you want moving and layer it on top of a copy of the same image and use track motion or just pan and crop to move the masked image. It looks like they darkened the background, which again, you can easily do in Vegas. Some of them they just added blur.

TheHappyFriar, thank you for the veggie!
I got now the idea easily:)

Plug-in: 'Sony Track Noise Gate' failed to load. Please make sure the plug-in is properly installed.
Plug-in: 'Sony Track EQ' failed to load. Please make sure the plug-in is properly installed.
Plug-in: 'Sony Track Compressor' failed to load. Please make sure the plug-in is properly installed.

My V10 warned me about above mentioned plug-ins. I'd better find them and install.

I've got V10 and didn't have any issues opening the project (it was originally a Vegas 8 project).

Those plugins are the default track plugins so they should be there. :?

Thank you your reply.

Version 10.0e (Built 738) 64-bit.
Some of the plug ins do not work properly. (Approximately %20).
I have also V11 in my Vaio but only %20 percent of the program works properly.
That's why I didn't switch to V12.

I'm on Vegas 10 32-bit.

Those plugs aren't necessary, I don't use any plugins in that veg, it's all in-Vegas tools, no plugins (even Vegas ones).

Could be V11 replaced the V10 plugin names & that's the issue. I remember that would happen when Sonic Foundry's names were changed to SCS, then Sony.
