Newbie needs help with MPEG2 file

I know it's me, but my lack of experience isn't helping. I've got an mpeg2 file on DVD that I want to pop into Vegas Movie Studio HD 10.0. I want to get it onto tracks so I can edit both video and audio, and throw in some other stuff. I alledgedly import from the DVD into media, but so far I can't even perform a preview; and I can't seem to load the info into tracks for editing. Actually I'd like to open it long enough to save to one of the more common video files and then work from there. Any suggestions appreciated.

Not sure how you " alledgedly import from the DVD", Buddy. Can you be a bit more specific on the steps you took to get the files from your disc into your project?

How did you get MPEG2s from the disc? DVDs are made up of VOB files.

Import DVD from Camcorder Disk was how I began under the Project Menu. Then, in the process it says importing one of two, then two of two. Two files wind up in the Media Window, 1. Under Name "VTS_02_1(01).mpg", under Type "0 movie clip", 2. Under name, "VTS_01(01).mpg", under Type "0 movie clip". Just looking at the two in the Media section that nothing is there because I can't do anything at all with either of the two files. Also, can't figure out why there are two files. Am not familiar with .MPGs and their traits. Hope this gives a better pic.
Thanks, BuddyB

It sounds like you did the right thing. The program will usually import the VOB files from your DVD and save them as an MPEG or two (depending on how many videos are on your DVD and how long they are).

Then you just drag the VTS01.mpg to your timeline. The program will conform the file -- which can take a couple of minutes -- but then you can edit it just like any other video.

Have you dragged one of those MPGs to your timeline and let the program conform it?

silly question, are you trying to import material from a commercial copy protected DVD?

Vegas won't do it.

No, not from a commercial disc. This was shot on a Panasonic 910, and xferred the DV mini from tape to DVD.

I have the one file in the time line with the audio, and I get the sound, but I can't see any of the video. I have a blue frame at the beginning and at the end with one pic right in the middle of the string. Nothing showing in the viewing area. Just will have to pick up a bit more knowledge.
Thanks for the input, BuddyB

PS: Update; got file into timeline with video and audio. Now I've gotta' figure out how to see all the footage so I can edit. Going through this with you guys makes me feel a bit simple; shoulda' been able to figure out sooner, but I'm on the way.

In Preferences->Video, set timeline thumbnails to all frames.

You are so right-on. Thank you, now I'm ready to go. This is the first one, so it may be a bit of a long haul, but that's OK. I'm really into this. Thanks a heap. And to everyone.
