Music video of me

Former user wrote on 12/3/2012, 8:23 PM
I probably shouldn't post this because I can't sing and have gotten pretty sloppy on guitar, but I wanted to show an old friend my 63 Les Paul Jr. and also test the new M-audio fast track pro interface that I acquired. Anyway, I had some problems with the latency that I am not used to and like I said, I don't claim to be a singer. But since others are posting music videos (much better than mine) I thought I would swallow my pride and show it.

Be kind

Most enjoyable! I sent it to my brother, who took up the guitar as an adult and would be thrilled to play a fraction as well as you play : )

More please. Jimi, anyone?

Hey, I enjoyed it!

Leslie West, Felix Papilardi, Corky Laing.
Saw Mountain many times at FAC in Boulder.
Later on it was West, (Jack) Bruce, and Laing.

Leslie was a ton 'o fun!

Boulder was famous for hardcore trios that put out more sound than 5-7 piece groups.

I was a big Mountain fan but never saw them live. Leslie West can play these riffs so smooth, it is almost like a violin.

Thanks for watching.

Kimberly,

Thanks, I played in high school and college, but have not played much in the last few years. I would like to play more, but can't find other guys my age that play around here.

Thanks for watching and your kind comments.

Ron,

I am glad you did. It was fun recording it and trying to figure out how to make it into a video.

Thanks,

Mountain, Sugarloaf, Zephyr, CSN, Ronstadt, Firefall, Michael Murphy, even young John Denver, those were the days to be in Boulder!

Did you get the latency issue solved? You are using asio drivers and have set the latency to a minimum of 256, 128 if you can get away with it without pops.
Former user wrote on 12/3/2012, 9:29 PM
DDM,

Yeah I had it set for 256, but it seemed like the metronome and I could not quite get it in sync. Of course, I have not played with anyone else for a while and doing this, was like playing with other people.

I have it set for 128 now and have done some other recordings and seem to be getting used to it. I recorded the audio using Vegas as well, even though it came with Pro Tools 9. that is a whole other beast.

Sugarloaf, Green Eyed Lady always reminded me of the Batman theme for some reason.

That was great Dave.

Video question - superimposing yourself sitting on the stairs - did you use bezier or difference masking?
musicvid10 wrote on 12/3/2012, 9:53 PM
Leslie West can play these riffs so smooth,
Yes, but Tommy Bolin (Zephyr) could rip them until it hurt, and make you scream for more.

Peter,

Thanks. I just did a quick bezier mask with soft edge. If you look closely, you can see a bit of "glow" around me.

Thanks for watching.

You could try the open mics in your area for folks to play with. I found a bunch of great musicians here in NJ that get together every Thursday not a mile from where I live. Now every Thursday is Bass day for me!

+1 for open mic nights. Great fun - at a pub near you :)

Paul.

Very cool, Dave. Good chops, too. In that era, Leslie was always my fave over Clapton, Hendrix, Page. Jimi could make a guitar scream, but Leslie made it sing. He and James Gang-era Joe Walsh are two of the most underrated players ever.

Larry,

Thanks. Interesting that you would mention Joe Walsh. I was also going back and relearning some of james gang songs, Funk 49, Midnight Man, etc. I was strongly influenced by them when I was learning and playing actively. Their riffs on the surface seem very simple, but the subtlety of their picking and tone make them extremely hard to duplicate.

Good rock and roll.

Slap on some Rogaine or throw on a good wig, and ya, you could rock with the best of them. No insult intended on the hair thing.

DWhite,

No insult taken. Such is the course of life. Thanks for the comments and for watching.

Nice tone! What amp are you playing thru did you mic or are you using amp sims?
Former user wrote on 12/5/2012, 7:41 AM
Byron,

I am using a Crate amp. Small but has a good tone and nice gain overdrive capability. I actually not playing very loud because it was at night and my wife was sleeping at the other end of the house. I used an EV Dynamic microphone.

The only thing I did in the mix was add some reverb to the centered rhythm guitar and the lead and distorted my voice some. and then panned two other tracks of the rhythm guitar left and right. 4 guitar tracks in all.

The Les Paul itself makes most of the tone.
