Capturing issue from my XHA1

Jfisher wrote on 11/11/2012, 6:32 PM
The Problem:
When I capture video from my XHA1 it will play for aprox 35 sec then the capture screen will freeze stopping capture, while my camera continues to run. When I hit "stop" on the capture screen all I get is a Device error. After this point I can not reconnect to my XHA1.

I tried:
Changing my templates, restarting my comp, changing tapes in my XHA1, make sure cables are seated securely,

My Equip:
Camera Canon XHA1, Computer is an HP Pavillion w/ windows 7 and quad core processor, Im using a 1394 wire, Not sure what else I need.

If anyone can help or has had this problem is there something I am missing? Thanks in advance for the help.

Get another firewire cable and remember always connect devices as "cold" yes, always do that. With new cable check to see if behavior is exactly the same, or does it exhibit different issues.??

I've had an XH-A1 for quite a few years. While I don't have your problem, I know that the camera's firewire port has been known to be intolerant of rough handling. For this reason, I've treated mine with kid gloves. Hopefully a new firewire cable is all you need, but it should also eliminate a variable in case you have to chase down a port problem on the camera.

Yes, the XH-A1's FW port is a very sensitive 'loose' fit. I get over this by gently pulling the FW cable to the right, then wrapping it around the mic holder several times to keep the pressure on.

Yes the fire wire seemed to be the issue. To bad such a great camera and having to manipulate the wire to an EXACT spot is irritating, thanks for help guys, that is why I joined the forums.

Happy to help! My beloved A1 still produces wonderful footage, but it's getting long in the tooth. Hard to believe I'm still relying upon 2006-era technology, but there it is.

Interesting... I have connected mine a number of times with no thought. Just plug it in and it works. Guess I have been lucky.

Maybe yours is a later model Paul? Hopefully Canon rectified it later. By the way, if you're brave enough, apparently a slight squeeze with a pair of long nosed pliers can sort this out. No...I've never been brave. ;-)

to Paul Masters,
Just so you realize the landscape of owners (and former owners) of mini-port firewire equipment is filled with case histories of the story "I never had a problem before, and now my mini-port is toast"
It is actually a primary reason why this port structure did not gain a more substantial following in the industry at large.
