Running on Win7/64bit, 16GB RAM, Intel i7 Core-860K. Graphics card AMD FirePro v7900 (endorsed by Sony with VP11..). Running Vegas Pro 12, Build 394.
GPU acceleration problems still persist. BUT, there has been at least some noticeable progress! Now with the latest Vegas 12 Pro update (394) there's actually some real GPU utilization according to GPU-Z, and I actually get a pretty nice real time preview (with best quality, the framerate in preview sticks to realtime which is basically unforeseen). My GPU gets around 40% utilization in Lagarith uncompressed video playback (source material a bit different than project).
This "working as it supposed to"-fun with GPU acceleration on doesn't last that long, depending on ,,.. hmm, probably star alignments or something. At some point, usually 5, 10, 15 seconds (maybe 20 if I'm lucky) in video preview playback, Vegas suddenly freezes. There's no crash and even Sony's error report tool won't launch. I just have to close Vegas from Windows Task Manager manually.
I just downloaded latest AMD driver updates today with the AMD driver downloader, didn't help much either. This is what I'm using currently:
Driver Packaging Version 8.982.8.3-121003a-148578C-Retail
Provider Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
2D Driver Version 8.01.01.1253
2D Driver File Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet002/Control/CLASS/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0001
Direct3D Version 9.14.10.0924
OpenGL Version 6.14.10.11796
Catalyst Pro Control Center Version 2012.1003.1130.18668
And my GPU:

I've tried running VP12 in Win7 Compatibility Mode, switching RAM preview off altoghether, changing the amount of RAM that should be given to Vegas for Dynamic RAM Preview, I've tried out different advices from various forums. But this is ridiculous.
It seems that with each Vegas update, the GPU acceleration is "sort of getting there", but still it plunges down and what we're left is (sorry to say this!) is a VERY unreliable piece of NLE software, even if you've spent a ridiculous sum of money into hardware in order to get a somewhat sturdy editing platform. *SIGH*
