VP12 Experiences with 1st Project - pros, cons

I've just completed my first project in VP12, having been using Vegas since it was a Sonic Foundry product. This thread is to share some of the good and bad experiences, hoping others can also share insights.

The interface upgrades are nice (highlighting selected clips, organizing). The explorer tab has a quirk, however: If I add a file to a folder via Windows explorer, I cannot "refresh" that folder in VP12 explorer tab to see it. Restarting the program solves.

Hardware acceleration seems to work for the preview window, and may or may not have any impact on rendering (I lack enough info to determine yet). My GPU is an AMD 5770, so I shouldn't expect too much help over my Core i7-960 CPU, I suppose.

NewBlue Titler Pro 1 works, but I had to uninstall and reinstall it, since the serial number does not work and is unnecessary for the "OpenFX" version within VP12. Titler Pro has some issues in VP12, though. Some transitions and styles just do not work, and cause weird problems. One simple title I added to an existing video track caused every other title on that track to be overwritten by a bogus title event that did not have the selected properties. I fixed it by adding the new title to a new video track, and not selecting any "style" preset. I have no clue what to make of such behavior from the program.

Rendering a 5 minute HD 720p60 clip into WMV VBR (max quality) took longer than I expected, but the main concern was that occasionally on render start, VP12 would crash. On other render attempts, VP12 would stop responding part-way through the render. Task manager end process and restart, retry render worked. No significant time elapsed between failure and retry, so I do not suspect heat as the culprit.

I love that VP12 allows you to match project settings to the first video file you place in the timeline. Great idea, and well-implemented.

Have not tried the color match yet, but I consider that a likely significant value added for VP12.

Hello IAM4UK, thanks for sharing your experiences.

In response to: The explorer tab has a quirk, however: If I add a file to a folder via Windows explorer, I cannot "refresh" that folder in VP12 explorer tab to see it. Restarting the program solves.

What build of Vegas Pro 12 are you using? This was fixed in the recent VP12 update (build 394), which I would recommend installing.

Best,
