do you have the latest quicktime.. version 7.1.6 or later for reading and writing QuickTime files? its a system requirement
iclay wrote on 8/31/2012, 7:25 PM
Yeah, I pulled down the newest version, 7.72. it won't run on Win8.
iclay wrote on 9/2/2012, 8:53 PM
Any ideas?

Install a previous version??

What version did you have installed when you first posted?

As W8 hasn't been "officially" released, you're on the bleeding edge and it appears you're feeling the pain.

Yep, i'd lay the blame squarely on the person who installed Windows 8 on your PC. Poor move for a production environment. I never touch an OS until at least after SP1 has come out.

When you say, 'I'm running MS12 on my Win8 box,' you're talking about running on VirtualBox 4.1.8 for Windows on top of some 'other' operating system, right? And you're not talking about running just a Preview Version of Windows 8 - right? Because I think not everyone understands what you meant by 'WIN8 BOX' and they are commenting on something else.

This is all RTM. I am the IT guy at my company and I am running RTM already. I know how to install it right. I've been doing it for over 15 years. Quicktime is a piece of garbage and is obviously poorly written. I found a ton of articles from folks who are having the same issue I am when they are using Win7. They had to mess with the ACL's in the registry, since the programmers at Apple cannot write the software to work properly. My main question remains. Is there a way around the requirement of having to install QT? Does anyone know if you can install the codecs separately for MS12 to be able to use them without the full install of QT?
musicvid10 wrote on 9/3/2012, 11:06 PM
Your observations notwithstanding, Apple and Microsoft are competitors.
Quicktime has been breaking its product for years to prevent the libs running on Windows NLEs, while desperately attempting to keep their player functional.
It's a grand leap of faith to assume QT for Windows would run on an unreleased OS. RTM or not, it's a safe bet Microsoft did not ship the code to Apple.
Most "IT guys" wouldn't even consider running a pre-release OS (or even pre-SP1) on a production machine. Many IT guys already know about deploying Quicktime Alternative (and its limitations). But seriously, I wouldn't necessarily expect it to work on the Win8 pre-release either.

Yes, Microsoft and Apple are competitors- and boy are they, wow!
I have been a user of licensed QTPro for a longtime for versions since Version 3 with Premiere. Getting the QTPro to coexist with other products on a Windows OS has become more and more difficult with each succeeding generation of products from both companies.

It is a likely scenario that Microsoft with Windows8 will finally totally break from QT. This has been attempted in the past even with early release of Windows XP - but Apple kept applying themselves in an effort to hold market share. I predict they will give up with Win8.

Though, in fairness, Windows 8 won't officially be released for another month and a half.

I find it hard to believe that Apple would refuse to make their program compatible with the most popular OS in the world. Then again, they might. I don't know. I'm not a fan of theirs anyway.

Regardless, I'm not starting a debate over who is better or when is the right time to start using an OS. I am still looking for the answer as to how to be able to use MS12 as it is intended, if its dependencies don't work. This was a Win7 and a Vista issue previously. Even my Win8 box has built in codecs to play the .MOV file format. Is there anyway for MS12 to utilize that codec? Or does anyone know of any QT alternative that is MS12 friendly?

Markk655,

I tried that option. There are different keys in my registry than the ones listed in that CMD file. I wonder if that's for an older version of QT. It didn't like my version. Didn't change anything.

"I find it hard to believe that Apple would refuse to make their program compatible with the most popular OS in the world."

Remember that this is the same Apple that decided that their phones & tablets would not run Flash, which is the most popular multimedia format on the web.

Good point!!

I was kinda getting the same thing a while ago..

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=12&MessageID=814203

Was using Vegas 10 and with the latest Quicktime update, couldn't save as .mov any more.. Gave up in the end, but just gave Vegas 12 a go.. Used same project file etc and did the norm, and it finally worked.. But then I went to do another one, and believe it or not, went back to the same issue.. What the Frak??
MadBeeOtch wrote on 9/8/2012, 6:47 PM
And of course, no Sony representatives to supply answers.. Frak you and your products..
iclay wrote on 9/10/2012, 12:43 PM
No one can provide any help or alternatives? I'd hate to jump ship. I do like using Movie Studio.
musicvid10 wrote on 9/10/2012, 1:29 PM
I definitely think Sony should drop everything it's working on, and issue an emergency patch for third-party libs on a trial version OS that will expire forever in a few weeks, is not intended for a production environment, and cannot be uninstalled or upgraded without first doing a scratch install of your previous OS (along with Sony apps). Makes perfect sense to me . . .
;?)

Well said, musicvid.
iclay wrote on 9/10/2012, 3:50 PM
What in the world are you talking about? Can you clarify that?
iclay wrote on 9/10/2012, 8:02 PM
My assumption is that you're referring to my OS. If you'd taken the time to read my post, you'd realize that I am running Win8 RTM. In your haste to be sarcastic, you missed that part which makes everything you said totally irrelevant.

I guess you're not familiar with tech lingo. RTM means that it is the "Released to Manufacturing" bits. It is the final code that will be sold publicly. I have it now since I am a Microsoft partner and have access to it before it is publicly available. But it is the final code that MS will be selling and does not expire.

While I never said Sony needs to be supporting this OS right away, I was asking how people got around the issue that is affecting me as it also affected users in Win7, which Sony does support.

You need to read a little bit more closely before freaking out and talking nonsense.
musicvid10 wrote on 9/10/2012, 11:14 PM
After giving it some thought, I guess I won't pursue this further.

The Windows 8 release for the nonentitled masses has been announced for Oct. 26.
I really doubt you'll see any Quicktime compatibility workarounds or updates for Movie Studio anytime before then.

Typing "quicktime error 46" into Google brings up 2,720,000 hits, including Microsoft's suggested "fix."

Hope it works for you.

Thanks for the link. I have seen that solution on a ton of different sites, yet it hasn't worked for me. That's why I was looking for an alternative to the QT requirement. I'll keep looking and hope someone sees this that might know of another workaround. Thanks!!
