Bob,
...to go on with your post to remind others too...
Can I purchase older versions of your products?

There are still good offers of legitimate copies of VMSP 11 from some reputable web sellers though. It should work with XP.

Even here it pays to be careful. Under 'My Account' the list of products is pretty long having used Sony products for a while. My current ownership is of VMSP11 - the Production Suite that was and which came with the additional benefits such as Sound Forge etc etc.
The bottom section of the software page shows me what upgrades I am entitled to and listed amongst them is of course version 12. However, clicking the link only takes me to the basic version not the Suite version which would be the equivalent of the earlier Production Suite.
Whilst not the end of the world, there are a couple of new additions to the Suite version which were not included in the Production version so depending on any particular individuals case I would recommend considering very carefully upgrading from the link provided under the My Account page.
The only way I found to get an accurate description of what you are entitled to was to go to Purchase > Upgrades > Click on VMS12 Suite edition which then describes who is entitled to this upgrade and at what price.

Understand there is a difference between "upgrade" and "update"

Updates are free but you only get a newer version of the same version that you own.

Upgrade is when you move from one version to a higher version. I'm pretty darn sure that there you are not limited to only the next higher number. You can upgrade from 8 to 12 if you want and it will be for the same price as upgrading from 11 to 12.
