VCR to DV camera to computer

I'm trying to capture analog video of some old, old 16mm film that was put on VHS years ago. I have connected the VCR to my Canon Elura 85, and the camera to my computer. There is no tape in the camera. When I issue a Capture in Vegas Movie Studio 8, Capture 6 opens, and there is a brief show of the video in the capture screen but then it switches to a message about inserting a tape. A click on the Advanced Capture tab and the video will display again for about a second and go back to the message about the tape.

What am I doing wrong? I think I did this successfully a couple of years ago. I'm running XP Pro. Will it help to run on my WIN 7 Pro [32BIT] computer? Thanks for any suggestions.

Turn off camera control in the Preferences of the Vegas Capture program.

The program is looking for a connection between the camcorder and the timecode on the tape -- which won't exist because your tape is on your VCR.

On the Capture panel, go to the Options menu and select Preferences. Under the General tab on Preferences, uncheck Enable DV Device Control as well as the next couple of options and Notify Me If Dropped Frames Are Detected. That should do it.

Yes. That worked properly. Thank you.

One more question: I have a DVD that I created from my digital camera, and would like to make a second copy. I no longer have the original Vegas file. Is there a way to capture the DVD back into Vegas so I can make another copy?

Don't even bother. Use whatever disc burning software you have installed to make a direct disc to disc copy.

Okay, thanks.

Well, I thought I had a program to do that but I don't. So, How can I bring it into Vegas to create another DVD?

Bob,
just download a free disc burning program. ImgBurn is a good choice.

Now I really feel dumb. I downloaded and installed it. Then I clicked on Copy DVD, and it seems to have done this, but now I don't see how to get it on another DVD. Guidance would be appreciated.

I'm not familiar with that particular program .. but .. with only one DVD drive you would need to remove the original disc and insert your blank disk. The image of your DVD was saved to your hard drive since you only had one drive. If you had two it would have read one drive while writing to the second drive.

It seems to always end up in a "program Nor Responding" condition. This ought not to be so problematical!

Bob,
for testing, I just copied a DVD for the umpteenth time successfully using ImgBurn and the linked guides (version 2.5.7.0). (Btw, where did you find Copy DVD button in ImgBurn??). Pls note what brighterside wrote also.

IF you don't succeed with ImgBurn, try doing a Google search "best free direct disc to disc copying software'.

Thanks for those references. I have printed them and will put them in a folder for future reference. My memory is good, just short. But I'm told that does happen when you pass 70.

Unchecking the Enable DV Device Control and the two following worked for two videos on the weekend, but it went back to the old behavior on the third video today. It plays for about 1 sec and then stops the tape. Fast forward and I see a shadowy image, but stop and play again only lasts for a moment and stops again. I even went back to one of the successful tapes and now it also stops after a second. What might I have screwed up meanwhile?
