"When I zoom in to a small portion of the photo it's totally out of focus, any idea how to fix"

You could try the Unsharpen Mask but really you're not going to wrangle much improvement. Just because an image is 10216x572 pixels says nothing about what is in those pixels or if parts of the image were in focus.

the whole photo is totally in focus it's actually made up of thousands of photos but for some reason vegas totally distorts it

If you zoom in on your image to the same extent with Photoshop or other reputable tool do you get the same (similar) effect?

Vegas may have a limit on the size of images, since it holds them in memory (I think). 59 megapixels is pretty big!

How did you generate this huge image? By stitching smaller images together?

Are you using TRACK MOTION or PAN CROP to zoom?

I just created a 12000x7000 blank image in my image editor and pasted a large test pattern in the centre and saved as .png file.

I loaded it into Vegas 9c with AVCHD project properties, and used pan/crop to zoom in. It did zoom in and was sharp, so it can be done.

I used track motion plux best/full...

PeterDuke, Could you perhaps post and/or email me your test project?

I'm thinking perhaps I have something somewhere set wrong in preferences?

What's weird is at one point with a a smaller image vegas 10 was out of focus but vegas 9 was fine but now can't get this image to work in either version.

the image is 22meg, If I zoom in using irfanview etc.. looks great.

Use event pan/crop -- not track motion...
Former user wrote on 7/26/2012, 9:08 PM
Don't use Track Motion, use Pan/Crop. I believe track motion starts at the project resolution and zooms into that, where Pan/Crop retains the original image resolution.

I tried pan/crop before didn't work...
trying again with new project etc.. seems like I may have it now however when I used pan/crop before to zoom in, it actually cropped the viewport of the image as well which I didn't want...
I think it looks like if I make position width larger after zooming in perhaps the crop issue goes away.,

Thanks everyone for even taking the time out of your day/night to respond!!!

Lock Aspect Ratio, Match Output Aspect (two different settings), and work from there.
Pan/Crop works. Many excellent tutorials are on the internet, although it may seem counterintuitive at first.

"although it may seem counterintuitive at first"

It still is counterintuitive to me. I would like to have a fixed window in which you see an enlarged image when you zoom in. As it is, you have a fixed image size and when you zoom in, the window becomes very small and you have to look elsewhere to see what you are doing.

when using PanCrop you have to think about it as if you are using a camera. When you Zoom IN, you see less image because you have zoomed in closer, same when zooming out.

Try to act like a camereman and it makes more sense.

Try the following steps:

1. Place the still image on the timeline.
2. Click the "event pan/crop" icon on the event.
3. Right click the image and choose "match output aspect"
4. Be sure that under "Source" on the left of the workspace "Maintain aspect ratio" and "Stretch to fill frame" are both set to "yes"
5. Set the "Lock Aspect Ratio" option / icon to true (or on)
6. You can now zoom and move around your image.

Note the numbers updating in the "Width" and "Height" as you zoom in or out. As long as these numbers do not drop below your project settings for width or height, you should not see any softening or blurring of your image.

The old way, from the dropdown, choose 16X9 or 4X3. There was about 4 or 5 options. And be sure aspect ratio is locked

Thanks again all , I seem to have it working now..
although when I view the video on youtube it seems to stutter a bit, I've got plenty of download speed so must be either youtube servers are busy or the encoding process is messing things up, off hard drive everything is smooth.
