I think it is a very good thing if SCS can release OSX products because there are still many professionals who think Macs are the only way to work and they hate having to power-down & restart in bootcamp just to work with a couple applications. This extra revenue for SCS can only be a good thing & it also means they are reaching-out to professionals vs. Apple's approach to sacrifice relations with professionals to cater to the masses (FCP X).
Adobe CS is heavily pushed in colleges & universities as a must-have suite just like MS Office. (The reason for CLOUD is probably to make it even more affordable for college students-they can simply pay by the month when they need it for a class...) IMO the masses who have some training in CS will not bother with Vegas if PPro is all they know. However, professionals like to have multiple tools to maximize their efficiency. There are many things that can be done more efficiently in VVPro than in PPro or FCP, especially FCP X. (I know, I introduce students to CS & have a background in FCP but prefer to use VVPro because I am 25% - 100% faster depending on the project...)
IMO this is a sign of good things to come if SCS pulls this off. IMO Sound Forge has a better reputation than Vegas right now due to the failures of SCS to fix V10e & now V11. Once folks see that Vegas handles sound much like Sound Forge, they may prefer Vegas over other NLEs because of the superior way it handles sound editing.
As I said elsewhere, I hope this doesn't cause a distraction from development and support of the main versions.
Yeah, same here. I've been hoping there'd be a SF11 this year as I'm waiting on that to upgrade SF9. Don't really want to buy 10 and then have 11 come out a few months later, likely with a cheaper upgrade price (not even counting the limited-time deals we usually get) judging by the cheaper regular upgrade for Vegas 11, which the SF pricing hasn't been adjusted to reflect.
This wasn't exactly the SF announcement I was hoping for, though, heh.
Yeah, I'm still not convinced - it would be too good to be true - but my hopes are pinned on Vegas on the Mac. Between these ads and requests for Mac beta testers, it's certainly looking promising.
I would also note that Sony Creative Software, for the last few years at least, have introduced their products at IBC in September each year. If the site has placeholders for the next 9 weeks of teasers, that would put the last one the week before IBC on September 7th.
I would put money on announcements of several Sony Creative Software products at IBC in September.
As I said elsewhere, I hope this doesn't cause a distraction from development and support of the main versions.
Consider that it would take a few years to port these applications and then you might decide that it has already been a distraction. Or on the other hand, maybe Vegas 11 was a distraction from the effort to port applications to the MAC.
Rob
(edit: What I was trying to imply here is that any effort to port applications to the Mac would have started a few years ago. If I were to bet, I'd say it started as soon as MS failed to deliver Vista on time.)
I'm pretty sure they just want testers who use Mac/bootcamp or possibly a new cheap, consumer app for audio/video editing.
It would be a waste of resources to port the real deal; Vegas and Forge to OSX and there's no point to it. Nobody will buy it ( macs are consumer appliances ).

Yea, nothing on there says Sound Forge but the hot metal being "forged" immediately made me think of Sonic Foundry and so I'm hoping that the speculation is correct. As most of you know, I just switched to Mac for everything except Vegas/ACID/Sound Forge which I keep a Bootcamp partition for, so this would be a welcome announcement for me. My hopes too are pinned on Vegas but one step at a time I guess. As the weeks go on I guess it will be more obvious but the call for Mac beta testers and now this... let's hope it is what we think it is.
I am learning FCPX right now and looking for an equivalent to VASST Quad Cam. If Sony updates SF and prices it correctly, they could have a welcome addition to the other Mac media products. And as others have pointed out, the stable hardware platform would eliminate many issues for users versus substandard or unsupported PCs.
"that would put the last one [placeholder] the week before IBC on September 7th.

. . and will SCS still continue to develop for the PC? Viz my thread on VP for iMac? I just invested in a PC for all that lubberly GPU and Win7 and so on and so forth . . . .
Pretty sure they will Graham, the sticky states moving onto Windows 8. Who knows what after that.
But clearly, they are dropping 32 bit support. And i think this will be implemented in v12. That means good bye old (but nice) 32 bit plugins...
Yeah, the blacksmith forge is a nice hint -- otherwise very out of place in that video. The typeface in the video is the same as what SCS seems to use -- compare 0:28 in the video to the Soundforge banner below it:
Also, the color scheme late in the video and the round "icon" look similar to SCS soundforge look-and-feel (at bottom right of this page:) http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/soundforge
Web registrar for http://www.finallyonthemac.com/ is the same as the registrar for this website (sonycreativesoftware.com) -- but that's probably true for a zillion other websites as well...
I'd be surprised if they'd make the leap of offering Vegas right off. I'd think SCS would just dip their toes in the water by porting Soundforge and Acid first, and then see what the reception is and how sales go.
Don't refer to the macrumors.com website because they give no indication either and are merely postulating a rumor.
The registrar for finallyonthemac.com is a privacy service which completely hides the owner of the domain. As you surmised, millions of domain names are registered through such services. That two domain names are registered through the same privacy service is about as significant as saying "you two must be related because you both live in California."
Given that SCS was looking for Mac and Windows beta testers I'd say they really are going to port applications to the Mac. I think they're also going to maintain the applications on the Windows platform, but perhaps only on 64-bit versions for both Mac and Windows.
Thinking backwards from that assumption, most if not all of the applications are at least 10 years old and originally built for older versions of Windows. A lot has changed since then. MS seems to have been driving steadily towards a 64-bit OS and away from 32-bit. They've also been pushing towards their Media Foundation and away from VFW.
I think the writing was probably on the wall when (before) Vista was released, (as well as when its release dates slipped massively). SCS was going to need to start planning to rebuild things. Fish or cut bait, as we say.
So, if I were planning development and knew things would need to be rewritten, I'd be asking for some flexibility. Some Vegas customers had been asking for Mac and Linux ports so why not at the very least plan the new development with a requirement that it be possible to port things to other platforms. The work had to be done, why not plan ahead and make it possible to move into new markets?
So, assuming that there really are ports of SCS products coming to the Mac, I'd assume also that there has been a bit of rework of the Windows products so that the development work that was required can be used on both platforms. Which means that you might see some pretty substantial changes to those apps that become cross platform.
If Vegas ports then I'd expect better interaction with Quicktime, the ability to actually read the friggin' timecode in Quicktime files, and VFW will no longer be central to Vegas.
On the other hand, I usually imagine a lot more than SCS ever actually does.
"Don't refer to the macrumors.com website because they give no indication either and are merely postulating a rumor."
You're right, Kelly, the Soundforge banner on the macrumours website could be a mockup. I do agree that referencing a graphic on a third-party website doesn't mean much.
This (the video) certainly could be an elaborate ruse constructed by someone, and intentionally designed to look like Sony's products, by using the same typefaces, color schemes, etc. If Sony hadn't been asking for Mac Beta testers, I probably would be more doubtful of its authenticity. But it's fun to speculate and look for clues.
Seeing SCS on the Mac would be heaven-sent for me as well. I use bootcamp simply because of SCS and having Vegas, Sound Forge, & Acid on the Mac would mean I could do away with it and run all my programs from 1 OS.
I would love to see the UI of SCS apps gone Mac.
Naturally, I would keep a bootcamp/Windows partition, just in case.
