Another successful "Compatibility Mode" story

Leee wrote on 5/6/2012, 9:19 AM
I just purchased and installed Sapphire Edge plugins for Vegas 11 (build 682/683) and 3 times in a row, whenever I just clicked on a preset, Vegas would crash. But as soon as I put Vegas in Windows 7 compatibility mode, the plugins work fine.

So, latest patch = not very helpful
compatibility mode = great workaround

But it's funny though because I already have the regular Sapphire plugins installed and they worked fine (with or without compat mode), it was just the newly installed Sapphire Edge plugins that were causing the crashes.

It's like a computer geek's mystery novel - whodunit? LOL!

Just curious, are you running Vegas Pro 32-bit or 64-bit?

64-bit

I've had no more crashes either since switching to compatibility mode. I thought I would try Windows 7 compatibility mode first so as to be as up to date as possible and Vegas stopped crashing from that point on. I put it into compatibility mode the day before the current update was released, and left it in that mode when I updated. Still working with no crashes. I am thrilled! I really didn't want to leave Vegas. I have no desire whatsoever to learn a new GUI, and I have always loved the workflow and features in Vegas.

Yeah, like you I turned on the compatibility mode a day before the latest release. However I turned it off when I installed the new patch. I was still getting crashes with certain plugins, but turning it back on to Windows 7 Compatibility mode definitely did the trick. I'm almost as happy as you Lawrence, but I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. Blame it on my mother's negative upbringing. ;-)

I hope you will report this to SCS.

How does one change compatibility mode?
Also, I fail to find the humour in equating any problem with this NLE to a geek mystery.
I make my living with this software and the recent problems that have delayed getting projects delivered on time are anything but funny from my perspective.

I set VP11-64 to win7 compatibility mode after trying build 683 without it. Compatibility mode appears to fix my problem with OFX effect dialogs crashing. (I think it's the dialog window, not the FX itself)

This doesn't fix all of Vegas' problems, but it's good to see at least one of them go away.

Evidently, some Windows update fixed an OS quirk that Vegas was using, or at least that the OFX filters were using.

I'd report it to tech support but I already have two things in the queue that aren't getting responded to. Not even in a computerized auto response. I think their tech support system is broken.

Dan, to change compatibility mode, you can just right click on the Vegas desktop icon and go to Properties. In the Properties window there should be a compatibility tab. Click on that tab and find the dropdown menu that lists the available comp modes. From what others have been saying, try Windows 7 compatibility mode first. Make sure you check the box, also, to enable the mode.

As for my humor, I'm sorry it upset you. I will try and refrain from making any humorous, comical, witty, sarcastically funny, or slightly askew comments in the future. Although a therapist might tell you that humor is sometimes a good relief valve for stress, but of course I'm not a therapist, I only play one on the Internet.
Oh shite, I did it again....sorry.

interesting - i tried compatibility mode (win 7) and vegas hangs at 'creating windows'....
Tom Pauncz wrote on 5/7/2012, 5:59 PM
I, too, changed compatibility mode to Win7 and a weird problem with OFX GUIs has been fixed (so far).

I found that while I was tweaking some OFX FX setting sliders, the GUI would just disappear - it went into hiding behind open windows (lost focus) - and only cycling through open windows with Alt+Tab would bring it into focus.

Leslie, I would try the other Windows compatibility modes as well. Give it a little time if it appears to hang at the start. That or uninstall and reinstall it then try compatibility mode again.

I think Windows 7 SP1 and a later update made some changes to one more more of the .NET frameworks - at least I remember Windows Update showing that a .NET framework was being updated... IMO this could be where the problem lies...

Leslie,
VP11 hangs for me repeatably, consistently, without fail - and did I mention ALWAYS - the first invocation of VP11 after a power on or reboot at that spot or the XDCAM thingy.

Not just VP11, but 9 and 10. I have no idea what causes it.

Win 7-64bit..

I originally installed Windows Vista 64 bit and then Vegas on it. I later upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit on top of Vista. I did not do a clean install of Windows 7 which is unusual for me. I had the free upgrade for Windows 7.

I strongly believe this is why in part I did not have all of the crashes with Vegas on my system.

I have a Sony voice recorder that reviewers say will not work with Windows 7 because the software does not install but it will work with Windows Vista. I installed it on Windows Vista and it works with Windows 7 because I upgraded on top of Windows Vista.

I am not using compatibility mode. It may already be there in some way but the properties do not show it. May already be in compatibility to Vista or it may have been automatically converted when I upgraded to Windows 7?

I hope this thread will help SCS figure out why Vegas works on some systems and not others.

Are SCS systems upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 like mine is?

I always do a reformat and clean install when I update the OS. If you shop around you can find OEM versions of Windows for around the same price as upgrade versions. It is a way better way to go.

Laurence says, "I always do a reformat and clean install when I update the OS. If you shop around you can find OEM versions of Windows for around the same price as upgrade versions. It is a way better way to go."

The Windows Vista I have is an OEM version that included a coupon for a free upgrade to Windows 7.

I usually do a format and then a clean install but got lazy and curious and just did the upgrade.

The upgrade was quite interesting in that it was a lot like doing an install of a service pack upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. It is as if Windows 7 is nothing more than a service pack to Vista with interface changes. The time it took to install it was very, very short!

In my case it allowed me to use my voice recorder with Windows 7 and maybe a reason why I did not get a ton of crashes with Vegas 11.

Note: I did have a moderate amount of crashes with Vegas 11 at first because my power supply was very subpar for my system and there were driver issues as well as issues with the earlier versions of Vegas 11.

Another Note: A lot of people here complain about being 'beta testers' when new versions of Vegas comes out but remember, SCS does give us a reasonable discount on the upgrade price for approx one month for doing so. So it is not like they charge full price for an upgrade that has not yet got the kinks worked out.

As for their beta testers, there are a lot of things to test and it is easy for them to overlook possible issues. If an NLE were to be 100% bug free on release it would never be released!

I'm a tad confused. Windows 7 has a Windows 7 compatibility mode? Surely it should only be compatibility with previous Windows versions??
Laurence wrote on 5/8/2012, 1:34 PM
Yeah, strange isn't it? That's why I never would have thought to try it had it not been reported as a success in another thread.

I assume while you have Win 7 sp1, you do have an option for Win 7 alone.

When I looked in the registry for the Compatibility mode setting it was listed as WIN7RTM.

In searching the web I came across the explanation that WIN7RTM stands for "Released To Manufacturer".

As others have stated, you will only have the Windows 7 Compatibility option if you have Windows 7 SP 1 installed.
