What do you look like? (2012)

John_Cline wrote on 1/10/2012, 2:59 PM
Every couple of years, I start a thread asking forum members to post a recent photo of themselves. Well, here it is again for the third time! This is what I said in the first thread from four years ago:

"I know all of you guys by name only and, with the exception of a few of you that I have met at NAB, I have no idea what any of you look like. I have a mental image of what I think some of you might look like, but I don't know for sure. (Although I'm pretty certain that BillyBoy had horns.)"

2008 "What do you look like" thread

2010 "What do you look like" thread

The instructions to post images to this forum are contained in this "sticky."

Here's a recent photo of me with my girlfriend, Candyce, on the occasion of my mother's 90th birthday party:

Oh, gee! The problem with any recent picture of mine is that, while they are taken with my camera, the people who take them are not photographers. So I look terrible in them. But this is the most recent one:

And here is one I took myself just holding the camera at arm’s length (I am looking so serious in it because I was thinking more about composing a picture with a camera pointed at myself than about what I look like):

Not sure why, but at our office holiday party all the women gathered around me and yelled out "take a picture!"

ps. i'm the one with the facial hair.

This is me with my wife and son:

Last year I worked on a documentary in Africa and because we did it so cheaply, shaving was impossible. I let my hair and beard grow for a few weeks. I hadn't seen my hair in years so it was quite a shock how grey and receding it had become. I call this picture "Dorian Grey plays guitar":

“Still”? Did you expect us to get young some day?

David, that is a really cool photo of you and the Shuttle.

I get such a kick out of this thread every time I start it. Why don't all you guys come to Albuquerque and we'll hang out over dinner and drinks.
FrigidNDEditing wrote on 1/11/2012, 1:06 AM
heh, I would post but it seems music has already beat me to it :)

I'm not much different, just a bit fatter since we recently went through a pretty tragic loss, but everyone in that picture is still here so that's good. Oh, my wife grew her hair out, and my son looks like a little boy more than ever.

Yeah, I know... a bit über-artsy-fartsy and stylized, but that is my mug in there from something done in the latter part of 2011; base pic was taken then.

The closing quotation is one of my favs and does reflect my core perspectives after all is said and done - with all my neuroses and imperfections withstanding. (And neither do I look that perfect nor am that peaceful in real life most of the time :)

@John_Cline,

I've only been here since 2005 or 2006 but long enough to know that along with this tradition comes that reminder that most of the veterans here are, well, let's say... over 20-something? ;) (I'm turning 57 in a few days.) We can wax about or poke fun at ourselves for the age thing, but... for me there is a definite upside in terms of why I come back here. It's not just what I've learned from all of you (tons), but the tone and respect that is the ongoing vibe of this forum overall.

Maturity-d'ésprit :)
