Working with others -- AAF problems!

cchoy wrote on 12/22/2011, 3:23 PM
So I have a sound designer working in Nuendo who is working with a dialogue editor who is working in ProTools. They are transferring files back and forth using AAF (it DID take a little while to get everything settings-wise to work, but now that we know what to do, it is super fast.)

I want to do the final mix in Vegas. In order to do that, I need the following to translate:

clip placement
panning
clip naming
basic volume envelopes
cross fades

I can't get an AAF to even open.

I am doing sound design for a re-recording mixer working in Pro-Tools 10. Pro-Tools can't seem to open any sort of AAF I make in Vegas (no matter what kind of settings I do.) Anyone have any ideas??

AAF import and export are not available in the 64-bit version of Vegas 11.0. ... use the 32b version.... does that work?.

Good luck with the 32 bit version too.
As I have stated time and time again, the only way I can get (almost) trouble-free cross-app/platform import/export is using a third-party OMF conversion utility.
Why SCS can't get AAF right is beyond me. Unless they don't want too. And now that FCP-X doesn't support OMF either, (or AAF) one needs to use a third-third party utility for FCP projects.

@ChristoC

32bit version does not work at all.
Everything is screwy.
:(

Any ideas?

Automatic Duck is now free. Works for FCP-X

but not (as far as I know) Vegas.

The Automatic Duck utilities are free, at least temporarily, since it was acquired by Adobe a few months ago. Get it while you can, if you or your clients work with FCP-X. http://www.automaticduck.com/products
It does not work directly with Vegas, but a subsequent OMF could be used with a third-party OMF> Vegas conversion utility, as I previously mentioned. ( though I have yet to try it )

AATranslator can read a ptf or pt5 session from PT10 & convert this to either Vegas Script or Edl (.txt), with all the features cchoy asked for.

It can also read OMF, but PT OMF's are very basic. See here for a comparison of the capabilities of OMF & Pt5 formats as a means of file interchange.

OOp's should have read the OP a bit better.

You can export from Vegas a using Vegas Script (xml) or Edl (txt) format & convert that to OMF for both PT & Nuendo.
Or just to PT, use PT5 format, that will give fade data not rendered files, also things like Track names, volume & pan etc.
To Nuendo, a track archive is very feature rich too.

Basically OMF & to almost the same degree AAF are very limited.

I tried a trial version of AATranslate and it seemed to inaccurately convert from OMF to Vegas txt. Clips ended up in different places on the timeline.

Also, I'm trying to avoid a 3rd party solution for something that should be basic functionality...

Hmm, there hasn't been a trial vers for a very long time.

AATranslate will move clips on the timeline if it is not a legal copy.

Get a legal copy and it will work. I use it all the time.

As I recall, AATranslate's trial version has very limited functionality.
I hear ya cchoy, an OMF converter should be included with Vegas Pro, or at least AAF import/export that actually works on projects from 'other' applications. But now since SCS is allegedly working on Mac versions, I doubt we will ever see it, or any of the persistent bugs being fixed either.

I bought AATranslate-- it's pretty great. And it also converts to .RPP (REAPER) files.

Some news. The latest AATranslator v5.4 now can read AAF, from Vegas. including Pan & volume envelopes. Actually we can read Vegas AAF slightly better than Vegas can. However there is considerably more info in Vegas Script (xml) exports.
Apple FCP-X can be read too but frankly is still WIP.

Writing to Pro-tools PTF is in beta & is looking very promising, for sure it will be a way better way of importing into PT compared to OMF or AAF. But so is what we have now, export to PT5 format.
