Subject:VST Preset saving behavior not right

In the past when I've saved a preset on a 3rd party VST plugin, it brought up the "Save As" field and made it available in the preset dropdown menu just like it does with bundled FX.

After an O/S reinstall and reloading the third-party freeware VST plugins in the "VST Plugins" folder, now when I save presets, it brings up the "Save As" field but then brings up another window to save the file as an .fxp file. The preset isn't saved in the dropdown menu. To retrieve a preset, I now have to go into the folder where the .fxp file is stored and retrieve it. Besides being an inconvenient annoyance, it also makes it impossible to quickly A/B presets.

How do I get it to go back to the previous behavior - i.e. just save the preset and make it available in the dropdown menu without going through this extra step to save and retrieve the preset?

Running SF8 under XP Pro SP3 if it makes a difference.

Thanks

I think you may be mixing up the save as behavior in the FX chain, versus the plugin.

(1) Saving an FX chain (which can contain just one plugin, if you like) puts the preset in the dropdown window.

(2) Saving a plugin preset (below the FX chain drop-down) will always create an fxp file, because that's the format used by VST effects, regardless of host.

My guess if that perhaps you were doing (1) before.

No, I haven't yet used a plugin chain. I'm talking about behavior within the individual plugins.

The saving procedure is somewhat different for VST and DX plug-in presets. Could it be that your thinking of the DX plugs?

I think you have got confused between Preset names, and Preset filenames.

If you start with an existing preset, modify it, and then save with a different preset filename, that new filename does not show up as a Preset in the preset list.

It works when you do the following:
1 - First type your new preset name in the Preset field.
2 - Click on the "save' icon.
3 - Enter the preset filename (.fxp) - best same as the Preset name.

Are you missing step 1 and expecting the 'xxxxxx.fxp' filename to show up as a Preset name in the list ?

Yes , it is different to the way DX plugins save presets, where you are not prompted for a filename. I guess that is just the way VSTs work

geoff

The thing is I didn't used to have to go through the process of saving an .fxp file, it just saved the new setting and it showed up on the dropdown list.

I think this behaviour is quite timeconsuming - why did sony change that? In SF 8 for example it was much easier to handle the vst plugin settings.

now in SF10 all parameters are reset to the default values each time I open a VST-plugin... But only the VST plugins - the other effects remember the last used settings.

this annoyance with VST plugins resetting each time to defaults is a reason for me to not upgrade to Version 10.
