Not recognizing GPU

Chanimal wrote on 11/13/2011, 8:13 AM
I got Vega 11 and was disappointed that it would not recognize my ATI 4670 GPU (which was more powerful that I needed for video work, but I had a few other apps that used the GPU and it worked fine.

So, I upgraded to the MSI 6870 Hawk (dual fans - quiet). It was a royal pain since my water cooing VGA adapter would not fit (didn't have the same holes so will need another adapter) and the card was so long and wide that it wouldn't seat properly with the built-in fans. I finally replaced some of the other water cooling parts and it is now installed. I also had to update my Bios, install all the latest drivers for the video card, Direct X 9.0c, etc., etc.

So I FINALLY jumped into Vegas and... GPU acceleration of video processing is still OFF and there is still no option to turn it on. That is not cool! It's not the video card--this is the same 6870 that Vegas shows on their website with benchmarks (ok, mine is OCX (overclocked)).

Any tips on why this is and what I need to do to make it work?

I haven't yet upgraded to Vegas 11, so am not speaking from experience, but...

Perhaps the card needs to be in your system at the time of installation in order for Vegas to fully recognize it's capabilities. I've had similar issues with software in the past. If it's not too much of a pain, I'd try an uninstall/reinstall of Vegas 11 to see if that might correct your problem.

Added note after rereading your original post: Overclocking your card is another issue in variance from the Sony specs. I would turn that off, too, at least until you verify that the card is working properly with Vegas.

Are your drivers current? It is up to your video card drivers to support OpenCL and to inform Vegas they do.

Run GPU Caps Viewer and click the OpenCL tab. It will show you if your device supports OpenCL.

The card comes OCX, so it is overclocked stock, but not ourside the manufacture's range. I didn't touch anything further--so it is as it came from the box.

It definately has the latest drivers of everything (new from the CD, but then updated from the site). It is above the specifications.

This is the case with BOTH of my computers. The new card is the 6870. Doesn't recognize it.

The software for the 6870 says NO cuda? Odd--is this only for nvidia? It does say Open GL versus 4.10.

The other card (in my other system that I use for business--but I installed to see if it would work (still an i7 quad, GTS 250) also doesn't work--but has the latest 285 nvideo drivers. It shows it is using OpenCL 1.0 CUDA 4.0.1

P.S. Thanks for the GPU software link to see the settings.

Anyone else having a similar problem. I ran several test and I definately have OpenCL installed (ver 4.1.1), Catalyst 11.10 (requires 7), all the latest drivers for my video card.

I have re-booted, etc. Vegas does not recognize GPU support. I have sent a message to tech support--no response yet.

"Direct X 9.0c"

Should be Direct X 11.

I think there is a problem with Catalyst 11.10 drivers.

I have a lowly HD6450 in my system, with Cat 11.10 installed VP11 wouldn't recognise it, but when I installed Cat 11.9 it was happy....so try rolling back to 11.9

(Cat 11.10 also broke DXVA acceleration in another app, so I don't think they are one of AMD's best driver releases....)

I am having issue with my card being recognized as well. It is an ATI Radeon HD 5770. Vegas listed this as an acceptable card. No answer from Sony support

Red Prince says, "Run GPU Caps Viewer and click the OpenCL tab. It will show you if your device supports OpenCL."

Is this software REALLY safe to install? No hidden doors or whatevers to somewhere on the internet?

Their web page makes me nervous when it comes to that. The graphic on that chip does not help!

One has to be very careful as to what one downloads!

Neither the AVG antivirus nor Microsoft Security have any problems with it. The Sysinternals Process Explorer shows no TCP/IP activity from it, so no hidden Internet connections from it.

As for the web site it is on, that is run by Jérôme Guinot from Lausanne in Switzerland. The site contains numerous tutorials for 3D programming. It has reviews and tests of various graphics cards. It also has a forum. And yes, it contains some very useful free software.
