SCS Forum Preview Tool - broken (link missing)?

Christian de Godzinsky wrote on 2/9/2011, 2:15 AM
Hi,

I have been using this handy tool every time I post here, but now it is not working anymore!

I don't remember who posted it originally, or how I got it. Anyone using WIN 7 Pro (64 bit) and IE8 in combination with this tool? Does it work for you? The original link seems to be broken (IP address missing) :(

How do I get this handy tool it back into working condition? Has this tool been moved to a new IP address?

Cheers,

Christian

Yeah, I miss it, too. I tried to list & understand the css/javascript so I could host it on my personal website, but came up short.

Forum participant "Jonathan Neal" was the author of this, but it looks like his last visit to here was Aug. 10, 2010.

"Well, maybe I should write it again... !"I found your tool very useful. If you need a hosting site, it can be hosted on mine (actually my dog, Jazzy). Or maybe I can mirror it, in case it gets deleted again.

Christian contacted me today and said you folks still enjoyed using my old tools. So, as a sign of good faith, I have restored the old forum tool and also built a need feed tool. It feeds HTML, RSS, JSON, and JSONP.

http://madison.thewikies.com/messages.html
http://madison.thewikies.com/messages.rss
http://madison.thewikies.com/messages.json

You can control the feed in the url too.

* Use category to see a specific category. By default, you'll see all categories. Others categories include;
- - 1: Acid,
- - 4: Vegas Pro Video,
- - 19: Vegas Pro Audio,
- - 22: DVD Architect,
- - 50: Vegas Pro Production Assistant
* Use message to see the feed of a particular message.
* Use count to control how many messages you see. By default, you see 10 messages, and you can view up to 80.
* Use callback to set a function to execute the json return. This is for the web pros in here.

Examples:
http://madison.thewikies.com/messages.html lists the last ten messages in all forums.

http://madison.thewikies.com/messages.rss?count=20&category=4 lists the last twenty messages in Vegas Pro Video.

http://madison.thewikies.com/messages.rss?message=749895 shows the feed for this thread.

http://madison.thewikies.com/messages.json?callback=graziesJsFn returns a JSONP object of the last ten messages in all forums with a callback to grazieFn().

Anyway guys, more updates to come.

Would it
be possible
to expand it to cover
more than one line

All things in good time. Tomorrow I may build a cross-device interface that scales gracefully on handheld, tablet, and desktop devices. At that point, it might make sense to rebuild the UI for the individual message view as well.

Grazie, the time stamp on your previous post and the one from your screenshot look matched and good to me. What timezone are you in? I use the time the website gives me and GMT it. Perhaps I need to manually specify that the website gives out a PST time.

Time permitting, I'd like to do a refresh on the actual forum preview tool. I'm glad to hear the positive responses so far.

Hi Jonathan,

My sincerest and honest thanks - you deserve all our appreciation! And a deep bow for your efforts so far :)

With your help this forum became more usable - and easier to use. Probably we all have to wait an eternity (or two) for SCS to update the rather archaic forum motor.

This work of yours is highly appreciated,

Cheers,

Christian

Jonathan, thank you very much for reviving (and expanding) this very useful forum tool.
I'm certain that I'm not alone when I say that it was sorely missed when it was gone.

Anyways, here's a screen grab of my post being 6:xx AM and the one in the iPhone app as being 10:xx PM:-

Cheers, good to see you back here.

For the feed, all timezones should now be GMT.

Also, I've added an HTML view which works great on handheld devices.

Also, images and videos load, even safely on handheld devices.
