changing playback speeds

What is the best way in VMS to change speeds within a clip? For example, the start the clip playing at a normal rate, then speed up real fast, then normal, then slow? I have seen this effect in a lot of music videos. Can it be done with keyframes to selectively vary the speed?

Same for fps...can that also be varied in a clip without affecting the whole project?

Thanks as always!

Certainly. Though you can't "ramp" the speed up and down in Movie Studio, you can set certain segments to suddenly speed up or slow down.

The key is to isolate the segment you want to apply Time Stretch to by slicing on either side of it so that it is a separate event and no longer connected to the part of the clip that will run at normal speed.

Then there are two ways to change playback speed:
1) Hold down the Ctrl key and "trim" one end of the clip. The shorter you make the clip, the faster it will play. Or;
2) Right-click on the event on your timeline and select Properties. You will then be able to numerically set the Playback Speed under the Video Event tab.

Lots more tricks like this in my Vegas Movie Studio book on Amazon, if you're interested.

Thanks Steve! Ill definitely check out the book. I am finding out so many things that VMS can do that I wasn't aware of!

To clarify, the Velocity Envelopes you are looking for are available in Vegas Pro, but not in Movie Studio.

I know this doesn't address your speed question, but check out robwood's post in this "freeze frame" thread over in the Pro forum. It works in VMS too (I tried it). Pretty cool.
