has anybody any experience with:

http://www.kdenlive.org/

i'm asking because (since it's free) some of my students are well beyond mm2 in windows, but not yet ready to pay for an nle program (which if they were, would certainly be vegas in one form or another).

i also like the fact that it's on linux, which means i can not only get them a more sophisticated nle than mm2, but introduce them to a completely new, (and free) os as well.

you could consider Lightworks

it is free, is going opensource, currently only available for Windows though they have said that Linux support will be coming.

Quite a different editing paradigm to Vegas (and most other things as far as I can see), but it is widely used in the film world if their promotional material is to be believed.

Just another option for you.

Ciao,

Blender has a built in NLE & compositing program too.

Another free one is AVS Editor:

A friend's high school age kid taking some beginning editing classes at school using this as part of their curriculum and has done some pretty sophisticated stuff with it.
