I don’t have 5 but I do use 4.5

The integration between Vegas and Boris Red for editing direct on VEGAS TIMELINE = sad.
You can use some of the fx like alpha keys, chroma/luma , color maps etc but you will only get a single image/frame for you to view the composite. it will render out fine based on that composite image/frame, if you need to scrub and key you will have to go back and forth= waste of time. So you might as well work directly in Red.

Or go for BCC7 no conversion of media necessary . check you graphic card compat first but there are some issues with the alpha channels which should be corrected soon.

For 3d text and logo animation = very good
For compositing pics in 3d space with light shadow , 3d cam etc = very good

Integration with Vegas USING RED TIMELINE = good.
Check formats for Red.
Boris RED is better than Adobe After Effects. After Effects doesn’t support such media formats as M4A, MP4, MPEG, M2V, OGG, WMA, WMV and so forth. And Boris RED supports the following media formats: AI, BMP, EPS, GIF, JPEG, PDF, PNG, PSD, TIF for graphics; AIFF, MOV, M4A, MP3, OGG, WAV and WMA for audio; AVI, DV, MOV, MP4 and WMV. (In order to import OGG, WMA and WMV files to Boris RED, third-party QuickTime plug-ins may be required.) By the way, neither application supports MKV, M2V and MPEG.

How this works is create a empty event on Vegas track, add Red FX, Fire up Red on the red timeline insert the media and do your thing. Apply and you are back in Vegas,

Boris Red is a very good piece of Video editing software.

Thanks Rory for your comprehensive response. I have boris contimuum for vegas and find it a very useful addition.

I was aware there were some limitations with the way vegas and the current version of Boris worked with vegas and so was curious to see whether version 5 had any changes in this area.

i have also contacted Boris and am awaiting a response.

It certtainly is easier sometimes to work in application that is set up as a dedicated compositing tool, prior to vegas i used dps velocity which allowed clips or a range of clips to be exported to DFX or digital fusion, worked on and then the velocity timeline would be updated with the modified clip. The .flw or fusion file was then accessable from the clip for further modificatiions.

The way Red works is different from BCC7 the crossover should not be difficult to make.
I am using BCC7 in Vegas getting used to working with it. But it is not as versatile as Red which can do a lot more than BCC7

For example Red has a Reflection map track or for high polished metal leave the texts in grey use that as a displacement on your texture and the same text as a mask all on the same track and you are done, I guess I am just used to working in Red and find BCC7 very limited, but it is awesome for keys and color controls etc on any media, AVCHD etc which is very handy.

Boris Blue is a bit different from Red in the way you layer the tracks and nest the composite, Blue is very good with 3d text and also allows you to import obj files, you can nest the track and use 1 texture map for all elements which makes things very easy or individually.

I'm glad to see this thread, since I was just looking at RED yesterday. I spoke with a rep and they shared that version 5 will have an improved interaction vith Vegas.

I voluntarily shared that I was using Vegas as my NLE of choice and the representative was very positive in his comments about the new opportunities for Borix / Vegas products, especially with the release of version 10.

...prior to vegas i used dps velocity...

dougs, a hearty welcome to Vegas.
I'm seeing more and more Velocity users on this and other Vegas forums.

> dougs "Can anyone give me some more information on its integratrion with vegaspro10. Can red 5 be opened from within vegas and whole clips from the timeline be worked on in red?"

The integration is exactly as you hoped it would be. You can add RED 5 to and event on the Vegas Pro timeline and then open RED and play all of the frames from the whole event. This allows you to do motion tracking and other frame based fx will full integration with the Vegas Pro timeline.

Rory, you'll be happy to know that:

The integration between Vegas and Boris Red 5 for editing direct on VEGAS TIMELINE = *extremely happy and fluid editing experience*. ;-)

Thanks Jr, sounds great,
Promotional price, strong aussie dollar, i'm in!
Great to see boris supporting vegas.

Will RED 5 act like Continuun's OFX plugins in Vegas Pro 10? That kind of integration would be incredible.

Does Red include most of Graffiti?

What are the main differences, if any?
Rory Cooper wrote on 4/20/2011, 11:36 PM
THANKYOU….Jr that is very good news indeed, this is going to make projects a lot quicker and more creative…..very happy to hear. Well done Boris FX.

Jr please make a request of the guys at Boris FX to do the same with BLUE, this would also be awesome.

@Rosto99 Red is the same as Graffiti but also has can composite tracks and extra fx, + particle gen etc.

Red can do everything in this clip except import wheel and separate wheel elements
This is done in Blue I have changed the background to a lighter blue sky which is reflected in all the elements etc, notice the images reflection in the text = one click to make that happen

As Rory said, Boris RED is all of Boris Graffiti + all of Boris FX + Final Effects Complete + more.

Take a look at : Top New Features in RED 5 for more details.

No, and here's why you don't want it to! Vegas Pro doesn't have any way of directly manipulating objects in the preview window. This is very limiting. Once you start resizing and moving objects in RED with the OpenGL Interactor you will understand.

BCC7 in Vegas Pro also has no way to combine objects in 3D space. Each object is on a separate track and they don't intersect. With Boris RED you can have multiple tracks of 3D objects all in a single event in Vegas.

BCC7 is great for some things but you will really appreciate the power of having the RED interface in Vegas for doing complex compositions. It's like having After Effects as a plug-in to Vegas.

Speaking of After Effects, Boris RED supports After Effects filters. I can use all of my DigiEffects AE plug-ins (Aurorix, Berserk, Damage, & Delirium) right in Vegas Pro. If you've ever seen AE plug-ins that you wish you could use in Vegas Pro, Boris RED can host them for you. This opens up a whole world of new capabilities for Vegas editors.

Sound really great,
thanks Rory and Johnny!

Can't wait to get my hands on the demo!
Spectralis wrote on 4/21/2011, 3:12 PM
Thanks Johnny, this sounds incredible. I've got AE and a few plugins for it and to be able to use them in Vegas via RED is great news. This should make RED 5 the most versatile plugin out there.

The best thing is I was able to upgrade to RED from Graffiti and FX for $295.
earthrisers wrote on 4/21/2011, 5:39 PM
Where did you find the Graffiti-to-Red upgrade for $295?
I'm a registered user of the latest version of Graffiti, but I can't find any way to upgrade to Red for that price. (I didn't receive any email from Boris.)
earthrisers wrote on 4/23/2011, 9:49 AM
Ah... I think I misinterpreted the original post where someone reported that the $295 upgrade to Red was available to current users of Graffiti and FX.

I read that to mean, current users of Graffiti and current users of FX.

I'm pretty sure now that it really meant folks who currently own BOTH Graffiti AND FX. That leave me out, sigh...
shb wrote on 4/23/2011, 10:48 PM
When you order you need to enter your Boris FX or Graffiti (not both) serial and your unique ID. Don't know if it checks that you own both programs but you can always send an email to Boris sales to be sure.
It's a very good deal anyway!

While I still have the learning curve in front of me, I was able to upgrade at the $295 price. I had Graffatti 3.0 some 5+ years ago, but never wrapped my hands around it. Does anyone have any suggestions on reference sites or books for RED?

Class on Demand - I bought and downloaded the red tutorials from boris online store. There are some free tutorials on the boris site too. I needed to learn AVID FX which is Red that only works in Avid. You can achieve some cool motion graphics fx with red, use it for logo transition wipes etc. Red working with Vegas is good news! Hope 10.d brings better stability to make the most of all the new plugins!
Spectralis wrote on 4/24/2011, 9:48 AM
As others have mentioned the upgrade is for either FX or Graffiti owners. I don't think you need to own both.
JackWhite wrote on 4/24/2011, 11:12 AM
Johnny - I note what you say regarding BCC vs Red. Do you think Red is "better". As a FX/Graffitti user I can upgrade now to Red for jkust $295. However, I like the look of BCC but that is $595 although I could get it for the same as Red, $295, as an academic user. So, for the same price, Red or BCC?!

Thanks
earthrisers wrote on 4/24/2011, 12:35 PM
That's good news -- that Graffiti owners can go Red for $295, too!

I just went to order it, and when I get to the shopping cart phase of the order process, I notice that the version I'd be getting is Red 4.3.

Red5 is about to come out (or is coming out now)... if I buy Red at the special upgrade price of $295 and get Red4.3, will I have to pay another upgrade price to go to Red5???

EDIT: I found a link on the Boris website that says "Red5 is about to come out--buy now and get a free upgrade". So it LOOKS like if we upgrade to Red4.3 now, we'll get a free upgrade from that to Red5. It's hard to be POSITIVE about that, though, because if you click the "buy now and get a free upgrade" link, it just does to a page with feature-information about release 5 -- there isn't any information that specifically says an upgrade from 4.3 to 5 will be free.
I'll probably take my chances and go ahead and buy 4.3 and keep my fingers crossed that I'm interpreting this correctly and that the 4.3-5 upgrade will indeed be free. (Hard to type with my fingers crossed, though...)
Spectralis wrote on 4/25/2011, 4:29 AM
Hi earthrisers, as far as I'm aware the upgrade includes the RED 5 update. I've always found BorisFX to be a very straight forward company so I doubt they would play games with us.
