Zooming on Timeline

Richard Jones wrote on 2/7/2011, 7:18 AM
Has anyone else found this problem with Vegas 10c? I no longer seem to be able to use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out of the Timeline. It was always a quick and easy way to allow a check, for example, on the length of your transitions or to find the FX icon on an event that was too short to allow it to be seen in normal view.

I know I can use the +sign on the bottom bar but thids is just that little bit more cumbersome.

Check your mouse, it is a known problem. I have had the problem since Vegas 8 and Windows vista. I have a Microsoft Natural Wireless mouse. I have to sling the wheel really fast to get the timeline to zoom, really annoying. made a ticket when it first started and they said it was a driver issue but neither micocrap nor sony can or are willing to fix the issue. to see if it is your mouse try plugging another brand or model in and trying it.

Being quite firmly rooted in 20 years' mouse use before the days of scroll wheels it pretty much never occurs to me to even notice it exists, much less think about using it. I always zoom with the up & down arrows.

Richard - works as expected here using a Kensington wireless mouse. Never had this problem. I use this feature all the time. Could it be something in your mouse configuration?

Have not moved to 10C yet, but fwiw, it works in 10B fine.

Wheel zoom works on Logitech Cordless Optical Trackman here just fine.

My Logitech mouse works just fine also,it is the Microsoft mouse that gives me fits, if I could live without the naturals shape I would use the Logitech but I have some of that nasty Carpal Tunnel going on. Thank goodness my Shuttle Pro works great.

Works fine in Vegas 10c, couldn't live without the scroll in Vegas!

Thank you very much to everyone.

It looks as though I shall have to try another mouse which is a nuisance as I've only just bought a Microsoft WirelesskKeyboard and mouse!

I'm using Vegas 10c on XP machine with a Microsoft wireless mouse (wireless notebook optical mouse 3000) with no problems. I love using the scroll wheel to zoom into the time line.

I'm using an MS Wireless Natural Laser Mouse 7000 but I didn't install the Intellimouse drivers. I have no problem using the scroll wheel in 10c.

Kelly, you're living in the dark ages. Scroll wheels are the best thing since napkins.

:p Next you'll be telling me i should have more than one button on my mouse.

I have played with the mouse wheel a little bit once in a while, when folks standing next to me bug me about it. I'm quite disappointed in the lack of resolution. Each "click" makes too big a change, so the control isn't fine enough to satisfy me.

On the other hand, the scroll thumb on the screen let's me swipe from one end of the document/timeline to the other with a simple flick of the wrist, or scroll in as tiny increments as i wish. I find the mouse wheel to be crude and primitive in comparison.

Man, when I am on final cut or AE which don't use the mouse to zoom the timline, it drives me crazy. I use it all the time.

I think, but I am not sure, you can adjust the zoom resolution in the internal settings. It has been a while since I looked though.

I'm not at home so I can't verify with Vegas right now, but I think when holding the Alt button down while using the scroll wheel, it gives you finer increments of zoom.

My memory isn't what it used to be, but I think I've done that in the past... :)

FWIW, I just checked the mouse settings in Control Panel>mouse>wheel, & you can adjust the number of lines at a time you want the wheel to scroll, per notch.

Well, let's see now. I want to zoom in on the timeline. So, arrow - up, up, up, up, up, up,up. Make my change and, arrow - down, down, down, down, down, down, down. Move to the next area to edit and - repeat.

The up and down arrows are tedious to use. And holding them down causes over-shoot of the desired zoom. I'm not willing to change the auto-repeat rate because I actually use this PC for ......... word processing!

So, the new Logitech M505 works great. The Micro$oft mice are now in storage.

I have found a similar thread in the DVInfo forum at:-

http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/what-happens-vegas/484519-mouse-zoom-wheel-timeline-2.html

The general conclusion seems to be that this is a problem with the Microsoft mouse (Grrr!).

Just to complete the story, I bought a new wireless mouse for £16 from Dyas's and found that this really rather cheap purchase did the trick. It's just so annoying! And unnecessary as well if Microsoft had only done their job properly.

Ah, Kelly, you should have three buttons, not two, but as long as your applications recognize "Chord Middle" you'll be fine...;-)

Since that last posting I've finally tried Vegas and CD Architect at home under Win7. Yeah, the mouse wheel works terribly in SCS apps but fine everywhere else. I'd say it's Sony's job to fix it.

This is an MS Natural 6000 that's shaped kind of like a baseball with all the buttons tilted ergonomically to the side. I have a lot of elbow pain and this is a compromise from an entirely vertical mouse. I'm unlikely to switch mice since others are more painful. If it's going to be painful to use SCS apps at home then I'll probably just avoid them.

The mouse works well with Vegas under XP with a generic driver but not under more modern OS's like Win 7.
