SURVEY: What camera and codec are you using?

NickHope wrote on 1/24/2011, 10:24 PM
Recently I find myself recommending things that Vegas can do without ever having tried them myself (because my camera is pretty old). So I thought I'd ask what everyone here is actually typically doing.

I'm particularly interested in what codec you vidSLR and AVCHD shooters are actually editing with in practice (e.g. native AVCHD, Cineform, Sony MXF, DNxHD, proxies etc.).

For "Happy with editing responsiveness?" please keep it brief. I'm thinking of smoothness of preview etc..

Please follow my format and let me know if I've left anything critical out.

OK, I'll start...

Camera: Sony Z1P

I have several cameras, but my main one is a Sony HVRZ7U. I shoot to compact flash mostly in m2t mpeg2 format. The video edits incredibly smoothly on my Core2Duo laptop. I typically smart-render into either .mxf or XD cam mp4 containers so as not to have to re-data-compress the audio.

When I use non-mpeg2 format cameras I usually use Cineform Neo HD.

I personally love mpeg2 HD cameras. It is my opinion that m2t or mxf footage on a timeline runs smoother on a lowly core2duo than AVCHD does on a screaming fast i7. Since I've started doing my Internet upload encodes with Handbrake, I find myself using 60i again (as opposed to 30p) since Handbrake does such a good job of removing the interlace artifacts with their decomb filter. I really must say that I prefer the look of 60i to 30p on an HD TV, but have been using 30p because it looks better on Youtube and Vimeo.

With m2t HDV footage, you can put the footage right on a timeline with no recompress, edit smoothly, smart-render into .mxf or XDcam mp4, author a Bluray disk with no recompress (using TMPG), and deinterlace and h264 encode rather quickly and at extremely high quality using Handbrake. As much as everyone else seems to feel the need to move up to more current codecs and formats, I am pretty happy with where I am.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

@liquid If you're always using Neoscene then you're editing codec is Cineform, not native AVCHD. Right?

I am ignorant re. Canon DSLR to Vegas workflows, which I will try to cure on another thread.

Please keep 'em coming folks as this is all useful info.

vast improvement over vegas 9, i can now edit easily, don't need to go to mxf or cineform, renders fine to mp4 (MC). if it was a mission critical piece, i'd also render to AVI and let Handbrake do the mp4, then compare the two.
