I just watched the video from CES with SGNL showcasing the camera (HDR-TD10). An interesting point (@ 3:08) in that the girl says "as of right now there really is no editing software available to edit 3D" and "who wants to sit at home editing anyway? "

....am I missing something here? Doesn't Vegas Pro edit 3D?

I'd suspect the usual "left hand right hand" issue.
Someone needs to have a serious talk with that "spokesperson".

I agree, different divisions don't communicate clearly between each other sometimes, but I think they missed a HUGE opportunity there with her saying that.

They aren't different divisions, they are different companies under the Sony Corp ownership.

Even at NAB with SCS across the aisle from Sony Professional, they don't seem to know each other exists. Sony Professional has Adobe Premiere running on some of their exhibits - right across the aisle from SCS with live demos of Vegas Pro.

Sony Broadcast hardware has to show that their gear plays nicely across the board. As for what the spokesperson said with this consumer-oriented camcorder, well it's just a shame, considering the various consumer flavors of Vegas. 30 seconds of online research on her part would have been worth a few thousand dollars in free advertising to SCS :(

That isn't necessarily the case here. VP10 was out before any camcorders were using the MVC encoding. In fact, it hadn't been adopted as the standard format yet and the CODECS for it have been very expensive. We do not know what format this camcorder is recording in from what I have read. If it is MVC then it may not be supported anywhere yet.

The 3D Handycam from Sony is AVCHD I believe - zoom in on the picture in this link and you will see it says AVCHD on the side of the camera near the bottom.

It's a miss at Sony to not coordinate their arms of the business better at a show like this. For people with much knowledge of and likely customers, they are likely to be aware of Sony Vegas 10 capabilities but not certain. A statement that there is no software out there to edit it is sad though.

I'll consider the camera myself if I decide I want to start doing work in 3d in the future and its proven to record good quality and is not problematic to work with. Right now I don't own any 3D displays and don't plan to in the near future so I certainly won't be an early adopter.

It may be AVCHD, but that does not tell us what 3D mode it is using. MVC is also AVCHD. So is side by side half etc. We will know when the specs are published.

It's a modified AVCHD at 28mbps. It uses alternate-frame sequencing at 60 frames per second alternating each full 1920x1080 progressive frame between the left and right sequentially. It is not side-by-side.

So does this mean that this camera has half the resolution of a non-3D 28mbps 1920X1080 camera?

Not necessarily. Define "resolution."
