I can honestly say I do not understand. Perhaps you can post some frames of what you are talking about?

I'm pretty sure they have video tutorials on the DJ website specifically dealing with Vegas.

See if this will help...

There are several more tutorials on their website, just go to Digital Juice> Community>DJTV and Training then filter by Software used >Sony Vegas

I'm not exactly sure what you're saying, but here's a few thoughts:

- first, did you set the alpha channel of your DJ animation? Right-click the event, select Properties (at bottom of list), select Media tab, then set Alpha Channel (near bottom) to "Straight (unmatted)".

- second, if the color of the DJ animation doesn't work right for a mask (black when you want white), then try throwing an "Invert" video FX on it to reverse the colors. If you just need to raise or lower the black/white levels (not black/white enough), then I think a "Levels" video FX will help that.

- third, if the DJ animation doesn't have an alpha channel built into it, I think you'll have to a "Mask Generator" video FX on it to construct an alpha channel based on that event's overall luminance, or the brightness of the individual red/blue/green channels.

I will review the tutorials but tis is specifically wheat I am trying to do:

There is a black (with transparency) paint stroke that I want to use for layer 4 of video. I drag the brush to layer 3 and apply mask mode for this layer. I see, I think that I have to threshold it so that the black becomes white and then I can use the mask, so that layer 4 shows as the DJ stroke.

I see that you posted your question on the DJ forum. Are you setting the event in the Vegas timeline as an alpha channel? I think that's what you're missing.

Here's a script to make quick work of it:

If I understand your desire correctly, I have recreated the situation using a .png of a black item with transparent background that I want to use as a mask.

Track 1 = black item on transparent background, this assumes that you have set the DJ content's Alpha Channel to straight using the script or manually. Add an INVERT video FX to the event.

Track 2 = a colored media to be masked. Child it to track 1, set track 1's composite mode to multiply/mask.

Track 3, the new background media.

If you are going through all of this just to color the brush stroke from DJ, it is much easier to just drop a Sepia VFX onto it and set the new color there.

To bomb the black use add as your composite then comp that as a mask

If it’s the opposite mask you need then as above

The footage has black where it should be masked. I have uploaded so the braintrust can tell me what is wrong.

For starters, you have set the alpha at premultiplied and if it is DJ media it needs to be Straight(unmatted). Then add the invert VFX to the black and white clip. Slide the blend slider all the way to the right.

You should be good to go with the rest of what you are showing.

I changed the mode to straight and no dice, there must be something else that I am missing

Just a thought...

Did you render out the overlay using the Juicer to match whatever your project specs are?? I don't think the files supplied by DJ are usable as is.

There is something that I am not seeing then. Can you upload to somewhere or email me so that I can get a couple of seconds of the DJ piece you are using? Something is slipping through the cracks. You may need to use a mask generator, but for this I normally do not need to.
Cooldraft wrote on 11/16/2010, 10:31 AM
After going through the tutorials, I found out that I have to use a luminance mask generator. That gets her done. About time I start using these now.
