Tiling? Effect - How Do I Do it in Vegas?

Joeybear wrote on 11/7/2010, 7:22 AM
My question involves a video effect that I've seen countless times, but I have no idea of what it's called (tiling?), or how to create it. It's when the video is playing and suddenly it breaks down into 4 smaller vids, then 8, and so on. The same video is playing simultaneously in all of the vids.

First, what's the correct term for this effect, and second, is there a Vegas plug-in that will let me do it? I'm not sure, but I think AE uses what's known as CC Tiler for the effect.

I know that I could simply create duplicate tracks and set each track up using Pan/Crop, but it would be nice if there were a plug-in that could do it for me.

Please feel free to e-mail me (with "tiling" in the subject line), and thanks in advance.

You can make the single video tiled by using the "Cookie Cutter/ Tic Tac Toe" effect.

But I think you want to replicate the video multiple times... like eight small squares playing the entire video, yes?
To my knowledge, the only way to do this is Pan/Crop or IMHO easier with Track Motion: Create four (8) new tracks edit the track motion to fill just 1/4 (1/8) of the screen, then just drag your video into the appropriate track. That way you can still have more control with the Pan/Crop for zooms or panning and cropping.

peace.

ps... i was going to email you this, but you don't list an email, dude.

Not sure what the effect is called, but the VASST Ultimate S plug-in will do this via its "Hollywood Squares" option on the Special FX tab. You can set how many rows & columns you want, whether you want to use the entire screen area or just what's inside the title safe area, and a couple different border options to separate the video/pictures (including none).

There may be a free script floating around the internet to do the same thing, but I've found Ultimate S to be well worth the money for the other time-saving options it has. The other major Vegas plug-in/scripting competitor, Excalibur, might also do what you're looking for.

Thanks to everyone who's replied. My apologies about the e-mail. I forgot that I didn't have it available. It's available now. : )

To answer I C E's question... yes, I want smaller squares playing the video; all at the same time. At this point, I'm really surprised that there's not more information available on this frequently used effect.

I'll definitely look into that VASST plug-in, as soon as the VASST site is back up. Currently, it doesn't seem to be up and running.

Thanks again.

Joey-

Ultimate S has a trial period so you should be able to download and see if it will suit your needs. I'd guess that Excalibur (a similar scripting plug-in) would also have a trial period, so you can see which you prefer.

Looks like VASST site is back up now. I also had problems with it earlier.

DaviTools Video Wall is a free plugin for Vegas that makes it easy to create a user-specified number of "tiles", each showing the same or different videos.
