button to marker linking

I created a project for a DL DVD but there was no existing chapter marker near where the layer break should be. DVD-A suggested the range where the break should be, so I found a suitable point and pressed M to insert a marker. This marker did not get the next marker number available, as happens in Vegas, but took over the number of the next marker along so that all markers were numbered sequentially. This is fine, but the button linking was not updated, so that a button linked to my layer break marker.

Should I insert layer break markers in a different way to preserve my button links to specific points in the video?

As I understand, a layer break has to happen at a chapter mark. So if possible you need to find the chapter mark or create a chapter mark without a button.

My advice is to go with whatever DVDA picks as the break point. Going with something else often results in unplayability past the chosen break point.

That being said, I now always use ImgBurn for DL DVDs. It allows you to choose a break point without future consequences, IME.

I know what you mean Peter. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a way to auto relink. I've always manually relinked all of the buttons to relevent chapters after inserting the new/extra chapter. Doesn't take too long, but certainly something you need to be aware of.

Thanks. Yes I am "aware of" it now, after wasting a DL disc.

Caught me out too the first time. One of those annoying little quirks that DVDA has. :-(

Realize this will seem a bit awkward, but what I do with DL is...

Prepare the DVD, render to hdd, test. Assuming it passes testing, copy to a new folder, open that copy in PGCEdit, select create ISO from the file menu... This will lead to a dialog where it tells me where the ideal 50% mark is, between which existing chapters etc. At this point it might happen that the best choice is one of the already existing chapters, but more often not. However, armed with this info it's not much work to go back into DVDA & since I know *about* where to place the break, I can find the best spot where a delay will be least noticeable, adding a chapter there & saving under a new proj name. Since I didn't open/alter the original, rendering this edited DVD layout takes a bit less time [ I save more time re-rendering than I spent copying].

Back in PGCEdit I verify the chapt I added was a good fit for the layer break as before, but hit cancel -- once verified I'll edit the title PGC removing the chapter, but leaving the cell -- that way it has no effect what-so-ever on chapter menus or anything else. Now I'll create an ISO to burn with ImgBurn, or just target that cell number in ImgBurn for the break.

Had one yesterday that didn't have a chapter within range that could be used for the break, but PGCEdit did say what cell to split, which was all I needed -- in fact I created/added 3 alternatives, picking the one that was closest to 50%.
